Effective Stress Factor Analysis of Proppant for Multi-stage Fracturing in Horizontal Wells

Bo Cai et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the effective stress characteristics of proppants during multi-stage hydraulic fracturing in horizontal wells and considers the geomechanics and long-term production characteristics of reservoirs. The results show that the stress on proppants is influenced by geological factors as well as injection volume, spacing, fluid type, displacement, and post-fracture management. Increasing injection intensity, reducing fracture spacing, using low-viscosity fracturing fluid, and implementing a reasonable flowback system can enhance the effective conductivity of proppants. Furthermore, the analysis of nearly 300 horizontal wells reveals that the effective stress of proppants in horizontal wells is only 50-60% of that in vertical wells, indicating a different proppant selection criterion and the potential to replace ceramsite proppant with quartz sand to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

Coated proppants with self-suspension and tracer slow-release functions

Yang Zhou et al.

Summary: Proppants play a vital role in increasing oil and gas output in shale oil and gas development. Tracers are utilized to assess reservoir heterogeneity and dynamic equivalence. Development of functional coated proppants with tracer slow-release function is challenging but significant. The study introduced carbon quantum dots into polyvinyl alcohol coated proppants to fabricate self-suspension proppants with tracer slow-release function, showing promising results for improving oil and gas production.

Utilization of Cr-Contaminated Oil-Based Drilling-Cuttings Ash in Preparation of Bauxite-Based Proppants

Pin Xie et al.

Summary: The study showed that OBDCA-sp/bauxite proppants had excellent performance at low mixture ratios, but increasing the ratio led to surface collapse of the proppants. X-ray diffraction results revealed a decrease in bauxite phase structure as the mixture ratio of OBDCA-sp to bauxite increased.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of using water-based drilling cuttings (WDC) to prepare sintered bricks and found that incorporating waste glass and fly ash could improve the physical-mechanical performance. Under optimal preparation conditions, the WDC sintered bricks met the requirements of Chinese and ASTM standards, providing an effective solution for recycling WDC from shale gas development.

Preparation of high-strength ceramsite from red mud, fly ash, and bentonite

Hongcheng Mi et al.

Summary: High-strength ceramsite was successfully prepared without any chemical additives through a two-stage sintering process using red mud, fly ash, and bentonite. The optimal synthesis conditions resulted in ceramsite with high compressive strength, low water absorption, and effective solidification of deleterious elements.

Effects of sintering temperature on microstructure and properties of low-grade bauxite-based ceramic proppant

Donghai Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, low density and high strength ceramic proppant was prepared by sintering high aluminium type low-grade bauxite and high iron type low-grade bauxite within a specific temperature range. Through XRD and SEM analysis, it was found that the mullite crystal conforms to the layer growth theory, showing step growth mechanism and forming needle-like morphology at higher sintering temperatures.

Summary: The study found that LTTD treatment can effectively reduce the risk of PAHs in OBDCs, but the impact on heavy metals is not significant. Significant cancer risks were identified for exposure to toxic heavy metals, while the risks posed by PAHs were not significant in both securely landfilled and LTTD-treated OBDCs.

Ultra-high heating rate effects on the sintering of ceramic nanoparticles: an in situ TEM study

Xin Li Phuah et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) heating to observe ceramic nanoparticles in real-time under ultra-high heating rates up to 1200 degrees C/s. It was found that ultra-high heating rate is highly effective in densifying 3 mol.% yttria-stabilized zirconia nanoparticles, while less effective for 8 mol.% yttria-stabilized zirconia or zinc oxide due to competing diffusion mechanisms.
