Hydrogen diffusion in coal: Implications for hydrogen geo-storage

Alireza Keshavarz et al.

Summary: The study reveals that with increasing temperature, the adsorption rate and diffusion coefficient of H2 increase, and are one order of magnitude higher than those of CO2. The adsorption capacities of both H2 and CO2 at equilibrium pressure slightly decrease with rising temperature.

Carbon dioxide adsorption to 40 MPa on extracted shale from Sichuan Basin, southwestern China

Ke Hu et al.

Summary: This study measured and modeled the adsorption behavior of CO2 in shale formations, providing baseline values for carbon sequestration planning. The experimental program involved extracting extractable components from shale using supercritical CO2. The results showed that the total organic carbon content of the shale was the primary factor determining CO2 adsorption and provided useful knowledge for future gas extraction and sequestration projects.

Gas Adsorption and Controlling Factors of Shale: Review, Application, Comparison and Challenges

Asadullah Memon et al.

Summary: Several crucial factors in shale, such as kerogen swelling and pore shrinkage, kerogen maturity, gas type, and moisture content, greatly influence gas adsorption capacity. Accurately measuring the adsorbed and absorbed gases, selecting an optimized gas adsorption model, investigating shale controlling factors, and accurately measuring adsorbed and absorbed gases can enhance the accuracy of resource assessment and production performance predictions.

Langmuir adsorption isotherm in unconventional resources: Applicability and limitations

Saad Alafnan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the applicability and limitations of the Langmuir adsorption isotherm for reserve estimation in unconventional gas resources such as shale gas and coalbed methane (CBM). It discusses the characteristics of unconventional reserves and how the Langmuir model is used for estimating gas storage volumes. Molecular simulation studies on organic materials with varying levels of heterogeneity were conducted, indicating that increased heterogeneity and multicomponent mixtures can reduce the predictive power of the Langmuir framework. Additionally, variations in reserve estimates from different evaluation models suggest a lack of understanding of unconventional reservoir gas storage dynamics.

Hydrogen Adsorption on Sub-Bituminous Coal: Implications for Hydrogen Geo-Storage

Stefan Iglauer et al.

Summary: The research suggests that storing hydrogen gas in underground coal seams could enable large-scale hydrogen storage and advance the development of a hydrogen economy. The adsorption capacity of hydrogen gas reached 0.6 moles H-2/kg at a certain pressure, with pressure significantly affecting adsorption capacity while temperature had minimal impact.

The Impact of Pore Structure on Kerogen Geomechanics

Saad Alafnan

Summary: The combination of hydraulic fracturing and lateral drilling has made it economically feasible to exploit unconventional formations. However, advancements in production aspects may not always be in line with our ability to predict and model the extent of a fracturing job. Molecular simulation was used to investigate kerogen's petrophysics on a molecular level and link it to mechanical properties, showing strong correlations between the two. This work provides a methodology for constructing kerogen structures with different properties, which can be useful for understanding shale's geomechanics at a fundamental level.
