Green and Moderate Activation of Coal Fly Ash and Its Application in Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3

Mingxin Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a green and moderate activation approach for coal fly ash (CFA) was proposed, and a series of CFA-based catalysts were prepared for NO selective catalytic reduction. The results showed that CFA could be effectively activated through mechanochemical activation, improving its activity for NO removal. The activation mechanisms involved enhanced CFA fragmentation and motivated Al dissolution, which increased oxygen storage capacity and NH3 adsorption capacity, respectively, leading to improved NO reduction performance.

Ash fusion and mineral evolution during the co-firing of coal and municipal sewage sludge in power plants

Ao Zhou et al.

Summary: Co-firing municipal sewage sludge (MSS) with coal in power plants can effectively treat the sludge, improve energy utilization efficiency, and benefit exhaust emissions. Experimental results show that the high iron content in MSS leads to lower ash melting temperatures compared to coal, and increasing the mixing ratio decreases the ash melting temperature of the mixed samples.

Effects of sulfation on the ash fusibility and minerals evolution of corn straw during oxy-fuel combustion

Ming-xin Xu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the presence of SO2 suppressed the release of K and Ca species, thereby increasing the ash fusion temperatures (AFTs) of corn straw. Two reacting mechanisms, including moderate and excessive sulfation, were proposed in the study.

Sulfur capture and release by ilmenite used as oxygen carrier in biomass combustor

Mariane Vigoureux et al.

Summary: The research investigates the interactions between sulfur and ilmenite as bed material, focusing on the roles of ash layers in capturing and releasing added sulfur under different combustion conditions. The study found that sulfur is primarily captured by bed materials with developed ash layers under oxidative conditions and released under reducing conditions. The main formed phases found to participate in sulfur uptake and release are mixed-sulfate-phase K2Ca2(SO4)3, K2SO4, and CaSO4.

Effect of Si/Al additives on Cl fate during MSWI fly ash thermal treating process

Guiyun Yang et al.

Summary: SiO2 and Al2O3 are suitable additives for municipal solid waste incineration fly ash melting. The addition of SiO2 or Al2O3 significantly promotes the release of HCl. SiO2 has an obvious effect on reducing Cl percentage in residues, while Al2O3 is more likely to retain Cl in the residues.

Experimental study on K migration, ash fouling/slagging behaviors and CO2 emission during co-combustion of rice straw and coal gangue

Lang Liu et al.

Summary: The co-combustion of biomass and coal gangue can reduce SO2 emissions and decrease ash fouling/slagging tendency. Research findings suggest that at a CG blending ratio <40%, K mainly forms K2SO4 and KAlSi3O8, while at a CG blending ratio >40%, it mainly forms KAlSi3O8.

Experimental tests on co-firing coal and biomass waste fuels in a fluidised bed under oxy-fuel combustion

Qinwen Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the co-firing of coal and biomass waste in an oxy-fuel fluidised bed and found that the combustion state can switch quickly during the co-firing process. Stable combustion in the fluidised bed can be maintained when the inlet O2 concentration is increased to 30% or more. The optimal biomass blending mass ratio contributes to a highly uniform temperature distribution, increased CO2 generation, and decreased amount of unburnt carbon in the fly ash.

Effect of mineral extraction on the evolution of nitrogen functionalities during coal pyrolysis

Lihong Wei et al.

Summary: The mineral composition of coal significantly affects the pyrolysis of coal and the evolution of nitrogen-containing functional groups. Different extraction pretreatments have varying effects on the nitrogen conversion mechanism in coal, with different minerals playing important roles in the transformation of char-N to tar-N/gas-N. These findings provide valuable data support for clean coal combustion and improving coal tar quality.

An overview of slagging and fouling indicators and their applicability to biomass fuels

Jakub Lachman et al.

Summary: Slagging and fouling are common problems in biomass firing, and the nature of biomass ash requires a different approach compared to coal firing. Laboratory observed ash fusion temperatures and predictive indices are commonly used to evaluate slagging and fouling propensity, with thermodynamic models and neural networks also being applied for this purpose. Despite the convenience of predictive indices and ash fusion tests, a more graphical solution has been proposed for preliminary slagging and fouling predictions.
