Experimental study on burning rates of large-scale hydrocarbon pool fires under controlled wind conditions

Jiao Lei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the burning of aviation fuel and diesel oil in open square fuel pools of different sizes under controlled wind conditions. It was found that the burning rates were proportional to the ratios of the ideal heat of combustion to the effective heat of gasification, and a modified Froude number was developed to better predict the behavior of large-scale pool fires under various wind speeds.

An experimental study on flame geometry in wind-blown pool fires and a new dimensionless parameter

Jingwei Ji et al.

Summary: This study built a small round diesel pool fire with a wind-blown experimental platform to investigate the relationship between wind speed and combustion characteristics such as flame length and tilt angle. The results showed that horizontal wind can enhance flame length when H-r is between 0 and 0.33, but has a suppressive effect when H-r is greater than or equal to 0.33. A prediction model for flame length and tilt angle in relation to H-r was introduced, and empirical equations for mass loss rate and heat release rate in relation to horizontal wind speed were obtained experimentally.

Predicting radiative heat fluxes from two buoyant turbulent diffusion flames from burning propane under cross wind

Bo Li et al.

Summary: Experimental investigations were conducted to estimate radiative heating downstream of wind-driven buoyant turbulent diffusion flames. A new triangular prism flame model was established to predict radiant heat flux received by downstream objects. Results show that radiative heat flux decreases with increasing flame spacing and intensifies with increasing wind velocity.

Numerical investigation of the flow characteristics around two tandem propane fires in a windy environment

Bo Li et al.

Summary: This paper conducts a numerical study on flow characteristics around two propane fire sources in tandem arrangement under cross wind. The results show that the flame interaction weakens as fuel source spacing increases, and wind conditions have a significant impact on flow field around the fire sources.

Flame interaction and tilting behavior of two tandem adjacent hydrocarbon turbulent diffusion flames in crosswind: An experimental quantification and characterization

Yuhang Chen et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the flame interaction and tilting behaviors of two tandem adjacent hydrocarbon turbulent diffusion flames in crosswind, revealing complex interactions influenced by flame length, separation distance, and crosswind speed. Significant differences were observed in tilt angles between merged and non-merged flames, highlighting the importance of dynamic behaviors of flames in different conditions.
