Chitin and derivative chitosan-based structures-Preparation strategies aided by deep eutectic solvents: A review

Mohammad Khajavian et al.

Summary: The high molecular weight of chitin poses challenges for its extraction due to solubility issues, while chitosan faces limitations in industrialization due to poor mechanical stability and plasticity of its films caused by incompatible solvent interactions. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) offer a solution for these challenges, and show potential in various chitosan and chitin productions.

Summary: This research successfully synthesized a novel L-proline:sulfolane deep eutectic solvent and used it in combination with chitosan as a polymer phase to prepare sustainable bio-based membranes. Microscopic analysis showed that the membranes had a completely homogeneous structure, and exhibited higher separation efficiency in separating methanol-methyl tert-butyl ether mixtures compared to pristine chitosan membranes.

Thermal Instability of Choline Chloride-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents and Its Influence on Their Toxicity-Important Limitations of DESs as Sustainable Materials

Mateusz Marchel et al.

Summary: The stability, reusability, and biocompatibility of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) play an important role in their applications. The study investigated the long-term stability of three choline chloride (ChCl)-based DESs formed using glucose, malonic acid, and urea as hydrogen bond donors. It was found that ChCl:urea DES showed high thermal stability and low toxicity to bacteria, making it a green solvent. However, ChCl:glucose DES decomposed at elevated temperatures and ChCl:malonic DES showed thermal instability and high toxicity compared to other DESs.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) exhibit significant depressions in melting points and tunable physicochemical properties, but there is still a lack of predictive understanding of their microscopic mechanisms and structure-property relationships. Research on complex hydrogen bonding is crucial for a deeper understanding and development of fundamental frameworks for DESs.

First deep eutectic solvent-based (DES) stationary phase for gas chromatography and future perspectives for DES application in separation techniques

Malwina Momotko et al.

Summary: This paper presents the first application of deep eutectic solvents (DES) as stationary phases for gas chromatography, showing their ability to effectively separate volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The synthesized DES was found to be a stationary phase of medium polarity with high selectivity towards alcohols, and specific interactions with certain analytes. By modifying the properties of DES, such as replacing HBA or HBD or dissolving macromolecular substances, the proposed stationary phase is highly flexible for various applications.
