Pyrodiversity and biodiversity: A history, synthesis, and outlook

Gavin M. Jones et al.

Summary: The current research on the pyrodiversity-biodiversity hypothesis shows mixed support with no consistent patterns. Future studies should focus on exploring potential mechanisms, considering scale dependence, standardizing pyrodiversity metrics, and conducting macroecological research.

Comparing N-mixture models and GLMMs for relative abundance estimation in a citizen science dataset

Benjamin R. Goldstein et al.

Summary: When detection is imperfect, ecologists need models to estimate relative abundance. The generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) and hierarchical N-mixture models are two candidate models. Both models can be viewed as a heuristic framework for relative abundance estimation, and model selection can determine which model predicts observed counts best. In predicting bird counts, both GLMMs and N-mixture models, especially those with beta-binomial detection submodels, are supported in a moderate number of datasets, suggesting their usefulness and context-dependent relative fit.

Bias in estimated breeding-bird abundance from closure-assumption violations

Frank A. Fogarty et al.

Summary: The violation of closure assumption can lead to bias in estimates, with permanent immigration and emigration affecting abundance estimates. Estimates from N-mixture and naive models are relatively unbiased when detection probability is high. However, even small violations of the closure assumption can result in biases of over 20% in estimates of initial and season-long abundance.
