Savanna fire regimes depend on grass trait diversity

Kimberley J. Simpson et al.

Summary: Grasses fuel most fires on Earth and their traits strongly influence local fire behavior. Variation in grass communities, including species and traits, leads to significant spatial variation in savanna fire regimes worldwide. However, current fire models lack the important variation in grassy fuels, limiting predictive power. Including grass trait diversity in models using remote sensing proxies can greatly improve our understanding and projection of savanna fires in the Earth system.

Contrasting strategies of nutrient demand and use between savanna and forest ecosystems in a neotropical transition zone

Marina Correa Scalon et al.

Summary: The study compared nutrient use and allocation strategies in neotropical savanna and transitional forest tree communities. It found similar nutrient concentrations and resorption efficiency in species from the two vegetation communities, but differences in wood phosphorus concentration and canopy net primary productivity.

The influence of abiotic and spatial variables on woody and herbaceous species abundances in a woodland-grassland system in the Eastern Terai of India

Dhritiman Das et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors influencing tree-grass abundances in a Terai ecosystem in northeastern India. The results showed that environmental variables such as rainfall, fire, water stress, topography, and soil nutrients, as well as spatial structure, had significant effects on species abundance and tree-grass ratios. The study highlights the importance of spatial-temporal variations in environmental factors in driving species distribution and abundance.

Monsoon forced evolution of savanna and the spread of agro-pastoralism in peninsular India

Nils Riedel et al.

Summary: This study, using data from high-resolution, well-dated lake sediments from Lonar Crater in peninsular India, shows for the first time that the expansion of savannas in peninsular India over the past approximately 6.0 kyr cal. BP was driven by monsoon weakening, rather than anthropogenic impact or fire regime shifts. The results provide unambiguous evidence for a climate-induced origin and spread of the modern savannas in peninsular India around the mid-Holocene, suggesting that savannization preceded and drove the introduction of agriculture and sedentism in the region.

Combatting global grassland degradation

Richard D. Bardgett et al.

Summary: Grasslands provide crucial ecosystem services, but are often overlooked in sustainable policy. Degradation of grasslands threatens biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being. Strategies to combat degradation and promote restoration include increasing global recognition of grasslands, developing standardized indicators, using scientific innovation for effective restoration, and enhancing knowledge transfer and data sharing. These actions can help halt degradation, enhance restoration success, and protect the socio-economic, cultural, and ecological benefits that grasslands provide.

Three Decades of Land Cover Change in East Africa

Eric L. Bullock et al.

Summary: This study analyzed land cover changes in Sub-Saharan East Africa using satellite observations, finding a significant increase in cropland area and a decrease in woody vegetation. The rapid population growth led to concerns about the conservation of natural ecosystems due to land conversion caused by human activities.

Assessing Interactions between Agriculture, Livestock Grazing and Wildlife Conservation Land Uses: A Historical Example from East Africa

Rebecca W. Kariuki et al.

Summary: Despite mobile livestock grazing being widely recognized as a viable and sustainable land use in semi-arid savannas, sedentarization and transitions to agriculture continue to rise in many pastoral communities worldwide. Our study in southern Kenya found a 30% decline in livestock grazing land over the past half century, despite it remaining the preferred land use in subdivided and privatized lands. Insightful historical data provide lessons for maintaining space for wildlife, diversifying livelihoods, and increasing pastoralists' resilience during transitions to market economies.
