Carotenoids present in goji berries Lycium barbarum L. are suitable to protect against mycotoxins effects: An in vitro study of bioavailability

Cristina Juan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bioavailability of carotenoids in goji berries using a Caco-2 cell model, and evaluated the cytoprotective effect of one carotenoid against a fungal toxin. The results showed that the bioavailability of carotenoids from goji berries varied depending on their compound structure, with ZDP being the most bioavailable. Additionally, goji berry carotenoids exhibited a certain level of cytoprotection against the fungal toxin.

Bioaccessibility and uptake by Caco-2 cells of carotenoids from cereal-based products enriched with butternut squash (Cucurbita moschata L.)

Milana Rosul et al.

Summary: Enriching cereals-based products with bioactive compounds is a valuable strategy to improve product quality. Our study showed that the bioaccessibility and cell uptake of carotenoids from pumpkin-enriched porridge, cookies, and sponge cakes varied and highly depended on food formulation and structure.

Uptake and Immunomodulatory Properties of Betanin, Vulgaxanthin I and Indicaxanthin towards Caco-2 Intestinal Cells

Yunqing Wang et al.

Summary: The present study compared the absorption and transport patterns of three main betalains, betanin, vulgaxanthin I, and indicaxanthin, in intestinal epithelial cells. The results showed that these compounds have different molecular effects on inflammatory and redox-related cell signaling. Betanin demonstrated a potent dose-dependent radical scavenging activity.
