Spillover effect of violent conflicts on food insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa

The global economic burden of violent conflict

Summary: This article estimates the global macro-economic impact of violent conflict using a novel methodology. The study finds that the absence of violent conflict since 1970 would have led to a 12% higher global GDP in 2014 on average. Civil conflicts are estimated to have the highest cost, and income growth is found to be affected for up to four years following the end of a conflict. Fighting in neighboring countries also significantly impacts countries, highlighting the importance of mitigating spillovers. Asia experiences the largest absolute losses from violence, while high-income economies benefit economically from participating in conflicts abroad. The analysis concludes that violent conflict leads to net global losses even after peace is achieved.
