New compound from the plant origin of propolis from Lombok, Indonesia and its antibacterial activity

Sayaka Mizuno et al.

Summary: We identified the plant origin of propolis from Lombok, Indonesia as Calophyllum inophyllum Linn by observing the behavior of stingless bees and conducting LC-MS analysis. We also isolated a new chromanone derivative, calophylloidic acid A, from the resin of C. inophyllum and determined its structure using various analytical techniques. Furthermore, we found that the resin, propolis, and calophylloidic acid A exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

The use of propolis as a functional food ingredient: A review

Yanet Irigoiti et al.

Summary: Propolis, a resinous product collected by bees, shows antioxidant and pharmacological activity that makes it an attractive natural product as a functional ingredient in foods. Encapsulation techniques like spray drying and nanoparticle incorporation are promising in transforming propolis into alcohol-free powder for food systems, while further studies are needed on its incorporation, effective dose, and sensory properties in final products.
