Deciphering Alternaria metabolic responses in microbial confrontation via an integrated mass spectrometric targeted and non-targeted strategy

Ye Tian et al.

Summary: This study utilized an integrated workflow of mycotoxin analysis and non-targeted metabolomics to reveal the metabolic changes of Alternaria pathogens and the effects of Trichoderma strains on mycotoxin metabolism. The results showed that Trichoderma strains significantly influenced the whole metabolome and mycotoxin production of Alternaria pathogens, and one Trichoderma strain could metabolize alternariol into its hydroxylated form. These differential metabolites revealed fungal physiological alterations under various confrontation conditions.

In vitro interactions of Alternaria mycotoxins, an emerging class of food contaminants, with the gut microbiota: a bidirectional relationship

Francesco Crudo et al.

Summary: The human gut microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining human health, while Alternaria mycotoxins may pose a threat to human health. This study found that Alternaria mycotoxins can affect the growth kinetics of human gut bacterial strains, inhibit the formation of biofilms, and be adsorbed by bacterial strains.

Occurrence of Alternaria and Other Toxins in Cereal Grains Intended for Animal Feeding Collected in Slovenia: A Three-Year Study

Janja Babic et al.

Summary: This three-year survey investigated the presence and co-occurrence of Alternaria and other mycotoxins in 433 cereal grain samples from Slovenian farms and agricultural cooperatives from 2014 to 2016. Results showed contamination with at least one mycotoxin in the majority of samples, with deoxynivalenol (DON) and tenuazonic acid (TeA) being the most prevalent toxins.

Alternaria toxins-Still emerging?

Georg Aichinger et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the current research on the contamination and toxicity of Alternaria and its metabolites in food, highlighting the challenges posed by their chemical complexity and mixture effects, as well as the recent advances in toxicokinetics research, including in vivo studies of genotoxic pollutants such as perylene quinones. Additionally, it discusses the progress in the development of analytical tools based on liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry for a broader spectrum of Alternaria toxins and assessing exposure through human biomonitoring.

Alternaria Mycotoxins: An Overview of Toxicity, Metabolism, and Analysis in Food

Anqi Chen et al.

Summary: The genus Alternaria, widely distributed in the environment, produces toxic secondary metabolites known as Alternaria mycotoxins. These toxins are ubiquitously present in foodstuffs and exhibit genotoxic and cytotoxic effects. Alternaria toxins mainly undergo hydroxylation to catechol metabolites and are combined with sulfate and glucuronic acid.
