Redesigning harvest strategies for sustainable fishery management in the face of extreme environmental variability

Laura K. Blamey et al.

Summary: This study tested the robustness of harvest control rules for a large prawn stock in Australia to environmental variability using a management strategy evaluation approach. Model fits to catch per unit effort were good, and stakeholders ultimately selected a permanent closure of the first fishing season as the optimal management option. This simulation approach enabled the selection of an optimal yet pragmatic solution for addressing economic and conservation objectives under a variable environment with extreme events.

Increased ENSO sea surface temperature variability under four IPCC emission scenarios

Wenju Cai et al.

Summary: Sea surface temperature (SST) variability of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) plays a crucial role in its global impact. The IPCC's sixth assessment shows that there is no systematic change in ENSO SST variability under different emission scenarios, but there is a robust increase in century-long ENSO SST variability under various IPCC emission scenarios. Models indicate increased variability in the 21st century compared to the 20th century.

Effects of re-specifying the Northern Prawn Fishery bioeconomic model to include banana prawns

Trevor Hutton et al.

Summary: The Northern Prawn Fishery is one of Australia's valuable federally managed fisheries, with over 40 years of modeling experience. The current management model may have bias due to the lack of explicit inclusion of banana prawns. Research shows that banana prawns are the key driver of fishery profit.

A framework for assessing harvest strategy choice when considering multiple interacting fisheries and a changing environment: The example of eastern Bering Sea crab stocks

Andre E. Punt et al.

Summary: Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management aims to broaden the set of factors considered in assessments and decision making, but its implementation progress is limited. This study integrates experimental data and monitoring data to examine the effects of temperature and ocean pH changes on yield and profit of multiple crab species. The results show that different species have varying sensitivity to temperature and pH changes, and maximizing profit has conservation benefits.

The effects of implementing a ?dynamic B0? harvest control rule in Australia?s Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery

Pia Bessell-Browne et al.

Summary: The study suggests that harvest control rules based on stationary assumptions may not be accurate in the face of environmental change. Adopting a dynamic B0 approach could lead to significant changes in stock status and catch limits for different species, with species-specific trade-offs in management performance.

Learning from three decades of Management Strategy Evaluation in South Africa

Carryn L. de Moor et al.

Summary: South Africa is renowned for being an early adopter of the Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) and has implemented Operational Management Procedures (OMPs) for its important commercial fisheries. While the first two decades saw successful implementation of OMPs and sustainable fisheries management, the past decade has seen deviations from OMP outputs due to Exceptional Circumstances (ECs).

From past to future: understanding and accounting for recruitment variability of Australia's redleg banana prawn (Penaeus indicus) fishery

Eva Plaganyi et al.

Summary: Researchers analyzed recruitment dynamics of redleg banana prawns in Australia's Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and found that low catches in 2015 and 2016 may be due to temporary drops in sea level and rainfall, affecting postlarvae's ability to reach nursery grounds. They proposed using two variables to predict bad prawn catch years and suggested developing a harvest strategy framework for management recommendations.

Identifying management actions that promote sustainable fisheries

Michael C. Melnychuk et al.

Summary: Rebuilding plans and ratification of international fishing agreements were found to be the most effective management interventions in reducing overfishing and restoring biomass. Additionally, the benefits of management actions were cumulative, with improved stock status and increased predicted long-term catches as more measures were implemented.

Harvest strategies for climate-resilient fisheries

Jeremy S. Collie et al.

Summary: The study suggests that biomass-linked harvest control rules can partially compensate for the impacts of climate change, while different forms of utility can result in different optimal decision paths. The future productivity of fisheries under climate change depends on the implementation of dynamic HCRs and the assessment of current productivity and abundance.

Indirect Impacts of COVID-19 on a Tropical Lobster Fishery's Harvest Strategy and Supply Chain

Eva Plaganyi et al.

Summary: The Torres Strait tropical rock lobster fishery was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, but the fishery-independent survey data remained unaffected, demonstrating the resilience of the eHCR. Weak links in the supply chain identified were the same as those sensitive to climate change disruptions.

Changing El Nino-Southern Oscillation in a warming climate

Wenju Cai et al.

Summary: This review discusses the global climatic implications of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and highlights projected increases in ENSO magnitude, rainfall, and sea surface temperature variability under anthropogenic warming. It also emphasizes the importance of understanding ENSO dynamics and highlights advancements in modeling and simulations to reduce uncertainties in future projections.
