Electrophilicity of Hoveyda-Grubbs Olefin Metathesis Catalysts as the Driving Force that Controls Initiation Rates

Juan Pablo Martinez et al.

Summary: The dissociative mechanism of initiation for a series of Hoveyda-Grubbs type metathesis catalysts modified at the para and meta positions in the isopropoxybenzylidene ligand is investigated by means of DFT calculations. The electron donating/withdrawing capacity of the ligand was screened through the incorporation of various substituents such as halogens, nitro, alkoxides, ketones, esters, amines, and amides. It was found that electronic properties of the catalysts such as chemical potential, hardness, and electrophilicity correlate linearly with the dissociative energy barriers.

The importance of the bite angle of metal(III) salen catalysts in the sequestration of CO2 with epoxides in mild conditions

Anna Vidal-Lopez et al.

Summary: CO2 sequestration by reaction with epoxides is a key tool to solve the problem of CO2 emissions in the environment. This study focuses on the formation of cyclic organic carbonates catalyzed by metal-salen complexes and compares the performance of different metals. Density functional theory calculations analyze the structure and electronics of the catalysts to assess their efficiency and reaction conditions.

Intramolecular Hydrogen-Bond-Based Latent Initiator for Olefin Metathesis Polymerization

Dharmalingam Sivanesan et al.

Summary: Latent olefin metathesis polymerization catalysts have great potential for producing thermoset polymers, but developing novel latent catalysts is challenging. A series of initiators bearing additional hydrogen donors were synthesized for examination of their latent catalytic behavior in ring-opening olefin metathesis polymerization. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding in initiators was found to impact the polymerization process.

Trifunctional cycloaliphatic epoxy-based thermoset polymers: Synthesis, polymerization, and characterization

Dharmalingam Sivanesan et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of thermoset polymers from trifunctional cyclohexylepoxide (CHE) and investigates their thermal stabilities and properties with different curing agents and reaction conditions. The CHE/IM system demonstrates varying thermal stabilities, while the CHE/DDM cured system shows the best thermal mechanical properties among all tested formulations. Activation energies for polymerization reactions are calculated to understand and compare the polymerization of CHE with different curing agents, in comparison with commercially available DGEBA and DGGHA epoxy/amine polymers.
