Acute effects of insulin and insulin-induced hypoglycaemia on carotid body chemoreceptor activity and cardiorespiratory responses in dogs

Santhosh M. Baby et al.

Summary: The effects of insulin and insulin-induced hypoglycemia on carotid body chemoreceptor activity and cardiorespiratory responses were investigated in beagle dogs. The results showed that insulin and hypoglycemia increased carotid body chemoreceptor activity and respiratory response, and enhanced cardiovascular reflex response. These findings suggest that insulin and insulin-induced hypoglycemia play a role in initiating adaptive counter-regulatory responses to restore normoglycemia.
