Sarcopenia as a comorbidity of cardiovascular disease

Ken-ichiro Sasaki et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia, characterized by lowered skeletal muscle mass, weakened skeletal muscle strength, and reduced physical performance, is associated with frailty and increased risk of falls and mortality. In patients with cardiovascular disease, multiple factors including systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and physical inactivity may contribute to CVD-related sarcopenia. Early diagnosis and prevention of CVD-related sarcopenia are necessary, and biomarkers such as atrial stiffness, coronary artery calcification score, and serum vitamin D levels may be helpful in identifying sarcopenia. Aerobic and resistance training exercises are recognized as effective strategies for preventing and treating sarcopenia.

Summary: This study found that 23% of elderly patients with heart failure had cognitive frailty, which was associated with a 1.55-fold greater risk for combined events within 1 year compared with patients without cognitive frailty.

Association among mild cognitive impairment, social frailty, and clinical events in elderly patients with cardiovascular disease

Takuji Adachi et al.

Summary: The study revealed that 65.2% of CVD patients had MCI, 70.7% had social frailty, and 19.0% lacked caregiver support. The combination of MCI and a lack of caregiver support resulted in a higher risk of adverse clinical events.

Short Physical Performance Battery as a Measure of Physical Performance and Mortality Predictor in Older Adults: A Comprehensive Literature Review

Caroline de Fatima Ribeiro Silva et al.

Summary: There is an association between SPPB score and mortality, with lower scores being linked to higher risk of death and higher scores to higher survival rates. However, more research on the accuracy of predicting mortality is needed, especially in determining specific cut-off points in different settings and regions.

SARC-F Predicts Mortality Risk of Older Adults during Hospitalization

J. Ueshima et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association between SARC-F scores and in-hospital mortality risk among older patients. The results showed that a SARC-F score of >= 4 predicted a higher mortality risk within 30 days of hospitalization. Patients with higher SARC-F scores had a significantly higher mortality rate compared to those with lower scores.
