Sepsis induces interleukin 6, gp130/JAK2/STAT3, and muscle wasting

Lukas Zanders et al.

Summary: The study found that IL-6 mediates sepsis-induced muscle atrophy through the gp130/JAK2/STAT3 pathway, possibly contributing to intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICUAW). IL-6 induces phosphorylation and expression of muscle proteins, leading to muscle atrophy.

Research Progress in Chinese Herbal Medicines for Treatment of Sepsis: Pharmacological Action, Phytochemistry, and Pharmacokinetics

Chen Cheng et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening disease caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, with a complex pathophysiology. Current treatments rely on antimicrobials and supportive therapies, while Chinese herbal medicines play an important role in treatment, but their mechanisms of action still need further research.

Babao Dan improves neurocognitive function by inhibiting inflammation in clinical minimal hepatic encephalopathy

Bingjie Lu et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that the combination of BBD with lactulose significantly improves neurocognitive function, reduces inflammation, lowers ammonia levels, and enhances liver function in MHE patients. By targeting and regulating the TLR4 pathway, BBD inhibits inflammatory responses in macrophages and astrocytes. Additionally, experimental evidence shows that BBD has anti-inflammatory effects in endotoxin shock mice.

Effect of Tongfu traditional Chinese medicine preparation on patients with septic gastrointestinal dysfunction: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Lijuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on the clinical efficacy of Tongfu traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation in the treatment of septic gastrointestinal dysfunction, and found that Tongfu TCM preparation can effectively improve gastrointestinal function, prevent disease deterioration, and reduce mortality in patients with sepsis gastrointestinal dysfunction. More evidence is needed to verify these findings.

Lipoxin A4 Restores Septic Renal Function via Blocking Crosstalk Between Inflammation and Premature Senescence

Chaojin Chen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that LXA4 can attenuate septic AKI by blocking the crosstalk between inflammation and premature senescence, thus restoring renal function and improving survival rate. Premature senescence plays a critical role in septic AKI, and inhibiting the crosstalk between inflammation and premature senescence may represent a new and major mechanism by which LXA4 attenuates septic AKI.

The Role and Therapeutic Potential of NF-kappa-B Pathway in Severe COVID-19 Patients

Apurva Hariharan et al.

Summary: COVID-19 causes a cytokine storm mainly affecting the lungs, with elderly and patients with metabolic syndrome being more susceptible. Immunomodulation targeting NF-kappa B activation and inhibitors can potentially reduce the cytokine storm, alleviating the severity of COVID-19. Inhibition of the NF-kappa B pathway may play a therapeutic role in alleviating severe forms of COVID-19.
