Block Copolymer Vesicles with Tunable Membrane Thicknesses and Compositions Prepared by Aqueous Seeded Photoinitiated Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly at Room Temperature

Qichao Zhang et al.

Summary: A method of aqueous seeded photoinitiated polymerization-induced self-assembly (photo-PISA) for the precise preparation of block copolymer vesicles at room temperature has been reported. By changing the total degree of polymerization (DP) of the hydrophobic block, one can easily tune the membrane thickness of the vesicles, while also preparing vesicles with different compositions without compromising morphology and colloidal stability.

Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Aqueous Dispersion Polymerization of 4-Hydroxybutyl Acrylate Produces Highly Thermoresponsive Diblock Copolymer Nano-Objects

Juliana M. Cumming et al.

Summary: The RAFT aqueous dispersion polymerization of 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) using a poly(glycerol monomethacrylate) (PGMA) precursor is studied. The aim is to produce a series of PGMA-PHBA diblock copolymer nano-objects by varying the mean degree of polymerization of each block. The copolymer morphology is determined by constructing a pseudo-phase diagram and using glutaraldehyde to crosslink the PHBA chains. The thermoresponsive behavior of the resulting nano-objects is characterized using dynamic light scattering and temperature-dependent rheological measurements. The findings show that replacing the PHPMA block with PHBA leads to significantly greater thermoresponsive behavior over a wider range of compositions.

Summary: A series of all-acrylic poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate)(x)-poly(4-hydroxybutyl acrylate)(y) (PHEA(x)-PHBA(y)) diblock copolymer nanoparticles with pH-dependent colloidal stability were prepared. The colloidal stability was found to be influenced by end-group ionization and block copolymer composition. Additionally, the worms and vesicles were found to be unstable under dilution, as revealed by different characterization techniques.

Simultaneous Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Bottlebrush Block Copolymers at Room Temperature via Photoinitiated RAFT Dispersion Polymerization

Dongdong Liu et al.

Summary: This study reports the first simultaneous synthesis and self-assembly of bottlebrush block copolymers at room temperature using photoinitiated polymerization-induced self-assembly (photo-PISA) with multifunctional macromolecular chain transfer agents (macro-CTAs). The bottlebrush block copolymers promote the formation of higher-order morphologies and exhibit a higher polymerization rate compared to linear block copolymers. The obtained bottlebrush block copolymer vesicles are used as seeds for further chain extension and formation of multicompartment nanoparticles with a sponge internal structure. This study expands polymer architectures employed in PISA and provides a new strategy for synthesizing polymer nanoparticles with unique structures.

Dual Thermo- and pH-Responsive N-Cyanomethylacrylamide-Based Nano-Objects Prepared by RAFT-Mediated Aqueous Polymerization- Induced Self-Assembly

Nicolas Audureau et al.

Summary: In this study, we reported a straightforward synthesis method for dual stimuli-responsive nano-objects using a RAFT-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly process in water. The tunable responsiveness was achieved through the copolymerization of N-cyanomethylacrylamide and a pH-sensitive monomer, acrylic acid (AA), and the particle morphology was greatly influenced by the core block length, AA content, and slight changes in the degree of ionization of AA. The nano-objects demonstrated complex dual responsiveness to changes in the degree of ionization and temperature.

Summary: The synthesis of degradable vinyl polymer nanoparticles/latexes in aqueous dispersed media is important for biomedical applications and plastic pollution control. Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has become a popular process for generating aqueous suspensions of diblock copolymer nano-objects. Switching between Thermal Initiation and Photoinitiation Redirects RAFT-Mediated Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Xuhui Luo et al.

Summary: RAFT-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a method of growing interest for the preparation of well-defined block copolymer nano-objects. By switching between thermal initiation and photoinitiation, the polymerization kinetics and self-assembled structures of PISA can be redirected. The difference in polymerization kinetics between thermally initiated PISA and photo-PISA is the main reason for the morphological difference observed in the block copolymer nano-objects. The combination of thermal initiation and photoinitiation allows for further control over the morphologies of the nano-objects.
