Chitosan/PEO nanofibers electrospun on metallized track-etched membranes: fabrication and characterization

O. Pereao et al.

Summary: This study focused on the development of stable nanofiber membranes using electrospinning of polymer composites on titanium-coated PET track-etched membranes. The membranes showed stability in various pH conditions, as demonstrated by solubility tests, and were found to be biocompatible based on tests with freshwater crustaceans. The composite membranes have potential applications in diverse areas such as dual adsorption and filtration systems in water treatment.

Fabrication and characterization of conductive polypyrrole/chitosan/collagen electrospun nanofiber scaffold for tissue engineering application

Maryam Zarei et al.

Summary: The conductive electrospun nanofiber scaffold containing polypyrrole was fabricated to accelerate tissue healing, with polypyrrole dispersed perfectly in the fibers and enhancing their conductivity up to 164.274 x 10(-3) s/m. The nanofibers with 10% polypyrrole showed better cell adhesion, growth, and proliferation properties, making them suitable for various tissue applications and particularly appropriate for body parts with electrical signals such as cardiovascular, heart muscles, or nerves.

Chitosan and collagen layer-by-layer assembly modified oriented nanofibers and their biological properties

Dan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, polycaprolactone (PCL) and type collagen (COL) were electrospun to oriented nanofibrous mats, and chitosan (CS) and COL molecules were then deposited on the mats by layer-by-layer self-assembly (LBL) technique. The successful fabrication and modification were confirmed through zeta potential, FT-IR analysis, and XPS measurement. Changes in surface morphology and increased surface roughness were observed during the LBL process, leading to improved mechanical properties and enhanced cell viability on the mats. Cell adhesion and growth along the direction of nanofiber arrangement in LBL modified mats provide an effective strategy for controlled cell growth.

Influence of spin finish on degradation, functionalization and long-term storage of polyethylene terephthalate fabrics dedicated to ligament prostheses

Tuan Ngoc Nguyen et al.

Summary: PET fibers and fabrics are commonly used in medical devices, and efforts to enhance their biocompatibility have included functionalizing them with anionic polymers. However, long-term storage of PET fabrics without proper cleaning processes can lead to degradation of spin finish oil, impacting surface cleaning and causing surface degradation. Understanding the effects of storage conditions on these fabrics is important for maintaining their surface functionalization and preventing degradation.

pH-Responsive Chitosan/Alginate Polyelectrolyte Complexes on Electrospun PLGA Nanofibers for Controlled Drug Release

Jean Schoeller et al.

Summary: Surface functionalization of electrospun nanofibers allows for the introduction of additional functionalities while retaining high porosity and surface-to-volume ratio. In this study, chitosan and alginate were sequentially deposited on PLGA nanofibers to form a polyelectrolyte complex for controlled release of ibuprofen. Chitosan with a positive surface charge regulated the interactions between the drug and the coating, resulting in slower release at acidic pH compared to neutral pH.
