Femtosecond optical breakdown in silicon

Tzveta Apostolova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the optical breakdown in crystalline silicon under intense near-infrared laser pulses, finding that the breakdown occurs due to a sudden increase in absorbed energy inside the material and leads to rapid melting of the crystal structure due to the presence of high plasma density.

An excitonic model for the electron-hole plasma relaxation in proton-irradiated insulators

Lorenzo Stella et al.

Summary: This study models the relaxation of free electron-hole pairs generated after proton irradiation using a simplified set of hydrodynamic equations, and finds both ultrafast and long relaxation times in amorphous SiO2, indicating the necessity of considering factors such as Coulomb screening and thermal detrapping of self-trapped excitons (STEs).

Toward precise simulations of the coupled ultrafast dynamics of electrons and atomic vibrations in materials

Xiao Tong et al.

Summary: Ultrafast spectroscopies can access the dynamics of electrons and nuclei at short timescales, however, accurate calculations to interpret these experiments has lagged behind. A precise approach combining first-principles electron-phonon and phonon-phonon interactions provides insight into scattering mechanisms in excited materials, paving the way for quantitative atomistic simulations of ultrafast dynamics in materials.
