Data-driven cognitive phenotypes in subjects with bipolar disorder and their clinical markers of severity

Francisco Diego Rabelo-da-Ponte et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify clinical markers of severity among cognitive clusters in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). The results showed neuropsychological heterogeneity in individuals with BD and an overlap between premorbid and morbid factors that influenced the distinct cognitive courses of the disease.

Clinical and demographic factors associated with delayed diagnosis of bipolar disorder: Data from Health Outcomes and Patient Evaluations in Bipolar Disorder (HOPE-BD) study

Kamyar Keramatian et al.

Summary: The median delay in diagnosis was found to be 5.0 years in BD-I and 11.0 years in BD-II. Clinical factors such as earlier age of onset, lifetime suicide attempts, and comorbid anxiety disorders were associated with longer delay in diagnosis, while the presence of lifetime psychotic symptoms and psychiatric hospitalizations were associated with a shorter delay. In conclusion, the study highlights the need for strategies for early identification and interventions in Bipolar Disorder.

Neuronal underpinnings of cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder: A large data-driven functional magnetic resonance imaging study

Summary: Cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder originates from the failure to recruit key regions in the cognitive control network (CCN) and to suppress task-irrelevant default mode network (DMN) activity during cognitive performance.

Cognitive subgroups and their longitudinal trajectories in bipolar disorder

Tobin J. Ehrlich et al.

Summary: Cognitive functioning in bipolar disorder is heterogeneous, with three subgroups identified, each associated with unique clinical characteristics. Over a five-year period, the low cognition subgroup showed improvement in auditory memory, the mid cognition subgroup showed improvement in visual memory, and the high cognition subgroup remained stable in inhibitory control.

Differential trajectory of cognitive functions in neurocognitive subgroups of newly diagnosed patients with bipolar disorder and their unaffected first-degree relatives - A longitudinal study

Hanne Lie Kjaerstad et al.

Summary: This study investigated cognitive impairments and changes in individuals with bipolar disorder and their unaffected relatives. The results showed that patients could be grouped into three neurocognitive subgroups, with the "globally impaired" subgroup exhibiting stable impairments and the "mild-moderately impaired" subgroup and unaffected relatives showing normative cognitive improvement over time.

Evaluating cognitive function in unaffected relatives of individuals with bipolar disorders: A meta-analysis

Emily S. Gillissie et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis provides a quantitative synthesis of existing literature on the association between cognitive performance and unaffected relatives of individuals with bipolar disorders. The results indicate that cognitive impairment is moderately present across all domains and particularly prominent in executive functioning. This finding suggests that cognitive deficits may be an endophenotypic feature of bipolar disorders, highlighting the importance of targeting cognition in prevention strategies.

Deficits in explicit emotion regulation in bipolar disorder: a systematic review

Marcel Kurtz et al.

Summary: The reviewed studies indicate impairments in explicit emotion regulation in individuals at risk for bipolar disorder, patients with manic and depressive episodes, and euthymic patients. Behavioral and neural findings regarding explicit emotion regulation in individuals at risk for bipolar disorders and euthymic patients show discrepancies, with neural differences mainly found in frontostriatal networks.

Is processing speed a valid neurocognitive endophenotype in bipolar disorder? Evidence from a longitudinal, family study

Sussy C. Luperdi et al.

Summary: In this longitudinal family study, it was found that BD patients exhibited significantly impaired processing speed compared to healthy controls and unaffected relatives over a 2-year period. Family members showed intermediate performance, suggesting processing speed may be a cognitive endophenotype for BD. Further research is needed to confirm these preliminary findings.

Evaluating endophenotypes for bipolar disorder

Riccardo Guglielmo et al.

Summary: The review aimed to examine recent literature on clinical, epidemiological, neurobiological, and genetic findings related to bipolar disorder endophenotypes. Strong candidate endophenotypes were suggested to include circadian rhythm instability, dysmodulation of emotion and reward, altered neuroimmune state, attention and executive dysfunctions, anterior cingulate cortex thickness, and early white matter abnormalities. Research suggests a developmental origin of the disorder, with these candidate endophenotypes present in early stages and at-risk individuals.
