Spotting Green Tides over Brittany from Space: Three Decades of Monitoring with Landsat Imagery

Louise Schreyers et al.

Summary: Green tides caused by excessive nitrogen inputs from farming sector have been affecting the coasts of Brittany, France for at least five decades. This study utilized Landsat satellite imagery archives spanning from 1984 to 2019 to explore the potential of remote sensing for detecting and monitoring green macroalgae blooms. Analysis showed significant interannual and seasonal fluctuations in estimated macroalgae cover, with no decrease in extent of green tide events observed despite a decrease in nitrogen concentrations in the rivers draining the study sites.

The influence of landscape spatial configuration on nitrogen and phosphorus exports in agricultural catchments

Antoine Casquin et al.

Summary: The study found that landscape composition controlled nitrate exports, while landscape configuration controlled total phosphorus exports. At small scales, landscape spatial configuration was highly heterogeneous, but became homogeneous at larger scales.

Spatio-temporal controls of C-N-P dynamics across headwater catchments of a temperate agricultural region from public data analysis

Stella Guillemot et al.

Summary: The study shows that nitrate concentrations in water increase with agricultural pressures and base flow contributions, while dissolved organic carbon concentrations decrease with rainfall and topography. Seasonally, nitrate and dissolved organic carbon exhibit opposite patterns in concentration. Soluble reactive phosphorus concentrations peak during the low-flow period due to dominance of point sources.
