Optimal cutoff values of primary tumour size to better predict long-term outcomes in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma undergoing total thyroidectomy: A preliminary study using restricted cubic spline analysis

Sung Woo Jang et al.

Summary: The study determined new optimal cutoff values for PTS as 1.4 and 3.0 cm, which significantly stratified patients with PTC for target outcomes. Subgroups classified using these newly determined cutoff values showed significantly different recurrence-free survival and response-to-therapy categories compared to subgroups classified using the cutoff values of 2 and 4 cm.

Preoperative Nodal US Features for Predicting Recurrence in N1b Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Na Lae Eun et al.

Summary: This study investigated whether ultrasound imaging features can serve as prognostic markers for predicting recurrence in patients with N1b papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), and found that preoperative ultrasound features, including lymph node size and hyperechogenicity, may be valuable in predicting recurrence.

A UK based two-centre review of multifocality and its role in the treatment of papillary thyroid cancer

Lucy Qian Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prognostic value of multifocality in predicting recurrence following thyroid lobectomy in PTC patients in the UK. The results showed that multifocality was not an independent predictor of outcome, suggesting that treatment intensification based solely on multifocality may not be warranted.

Management of Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: The Standard of Care

Anca M. Avram et al.

Summary: Over the past decade, the management of differentiated thyroid cancer has shifted towards risk stratification to optimize the benefits and minimize the complications of radioiodine therapy. This therapy is guided by various factors including surgical histopathology, molecular markers, postoperative diagnostic radioiodine scintigraphy, and thyroglobulin levels. The use of radioiodine is based on the expression of the sodium-iodine symporter in normal and neoplastic thyroid tissue. This article summarizes the essential information for multidisciplinary management of differentiated thyroid cancer, highlighting the importance of individualizing radioiodine therapy based on the patient's risk for tumor recurrence.

How Many Nodes to Take? Lymph Node Ratio Below 1/3 Reduces Papillary Thyroid Cancer Nodal Recurrence

Rachel E. Weitzman et al.

Summary: This study aims to determine variables predictive of nodal recurrence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and suggests that lymph node ratio (LNR) lower than 0.3 is optimal to reduce the risk of recurrence. These findings provide guidance for clinical decision-making. The next steps include cohort studies to validate the findings and weight variable analysis to optimize the extent of surgical therapeutic dissection.

Predictors of Recurrence in Patients with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: Does Male Sex Matter?

Hyeji Kim et al.

Summary: Men with papillary thyroid carcinoma do not have an increased risk of recurrence compared to women, despite having more aggressive disease. The impact of sex on recurrence is not associated with tumor size or patient age.

Thyroid cancer incidence trends by histology in 25 countries: a population-based study

Adalberto Miranda-Filho et al.

Summary: This study analyzed international trends of thyroid cancer incidence by major histological subtypes based on data collected by IARC from 1998 to 2012. The results showed that papillary thyroid cancer was the main contributor and the only subtype that systematically increased in all countries, with large variability between countries.

Association of Multifocality With Prognosis of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Hyeonkyeong Kim et al.

Summary: This study found that multifocality was significantly associated with an increased risk of recurrence in patients with PTC, while cancer-specific survival showed no difference. Differences in tumor size, number of tumor foci, and patient age should be considered when interpreting the multifocality and the risk of recurrence.
