Early-stage visual perception impairment in schizophrenia, bottom-up and back again

Petr Adamek et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia disrupts visual perception, potentially affecting the precortical areas and signaling processes. Changes in signal characteristics and misinterpretation of visual stimuli may play a role in the development of schizophrenic disease.

Improving power in functional magnetic resonance imaging by moving beyond cluster-level inference

Stephanie Noble et al.

Summary: In neuroimaging, inference is often made at the level of focal brain areas or circuits. However, recent studies have shown that broad-scale effects distributed throughout the brain may play a more important role than previously thought. This study evaluates the impact of focal versus broad-scale perspectives on inference using real data, and finds that broad-scale procedures have higher statistical power and sensitivity.

A Whole-Brain and Cross-Diagnostic Perspective on Functional Brain Network Dysfunction

Marjolein Spronk et al.

Summary: This study found that while the whole-brain resting-state functional network organization is highly similar across individuals with various mental disorders, subtle differences in network graph distance can predict diagnosis. The results suggest a need to reevaluate neurocognitive theories of mental illness, with a focus on subtle functional brain network changes.

Aberrant Cortical Connectivity During Ambiguous Object Recognition Is Associated With Schizophrenia

Victor J. Pokorny et al.

Summary: This study found altered neural activations in V1, IPS, and MFG in patients with schizophrenia. Psychophysiological interaction analyses revealed negative connectivity between V1 and MFG in patient groups and altered modulation of connectivity between conditions from right IPS to left IPS and right IPS to left MFG in patients with SCZ and SREL.

Cross-validation and permutations in MVPA: Validity of permutation strategies and power of cross-validation schemes

Giancarlo Valente et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the false positive control of different permutation strategies and the statistical power of different cross-validation schemes. Simulations demonstrate that estimating the entire cross-validation error on each permuted dataset is the only statistically valid permutation strategy. Among different cross-validation schemes, a repeated split-half cross-validation is the most powerful.

Activity flow underlying abnormalities in brain activations and cognition in schizophrenia

Luke J. Hearne et al.

Summary: Cognitive dysfunction in brain disorders such as schizophrenia is associated with aberrant brain activations caused by abnormal flow of brain activity across functional connectivity pathways. Activity flow models accurately predict abnormal cognitive activations across multiple brain networks, and connectivity-based clinical interventions can normalize brain activations and behavior in patients. These findings suggest that dysfunctional task-evoked activity flow is a large-scale network mechanism contributing to cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia.
