Nonlinear behavior and instabilities of a hyperelastic von Mises truss

Filipe Meirelles Fonseca et al.

Summary: In the field of structural stability, there has been a renewed interest due to new applications involving smart and deployable structures, micro-and nanocomponents and mechanical metamaterials. This paper investigates the nonlinear behavior, bifurcations and instabilities of a hyperelastic von Mises truss exhibiting multistable behavior. Analyzing the influence of geometric and material nonlinearities, the study provides insights into the truss load carrying capacity and expands the understanding of nonlinear materials.

A review on buckling and postbuckling of thin elastic beams

Samir Emam et al.

Summary: This paper reviews models and solutions for the buckling and postbuckling of beams from the 1950s to present day, discussing the formulation of nonlinear buckling problems for beams with movable and immovable ends, providing both approximate and exact solutions. It aims to serve as a comprehensive resource for researchers interested in the buckling and postbuckling of beams, combining outcomes from structural dynamics and nonlinear vibration perspectives.

Vibration and snapping of a self-contacted beam under prescribed end rotations

Jen-San Chen et al.

Summary: The experiment result suggests that the predicted sideway snapping may be prevented by sliding friction between contact surfaces, and the beam snaps symmetrically by squeezing past the center of the end points. The experiment demonstrates that in the imperfect model, the beam snaps sideways.

Topology optimization with linearized buckling criteria in 250 lines of Matlab

Federico Ferrari et al.

Summary: The Matlab code presented here is designed for topology optimization based on linearized buckling criteria, handling multiple objectives or constraints efficiently. By using aggregation functions, sequential approximation, and vectorized implementation, the code improves efficiency and reduces computational bottlenecks. This allows for solving buckling topology optimization problems of significant size on a laptop, demonstrating code flexibility and performance through structural design examples.

Experimental and numerical studies on nonlinear vibrations and dynamic snap-through phenomena of bistable asymmetric composite laminated shallow shell under center foundation excitation

M. Q. Wu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the nonlinear vibrations and dynamic snap-through behaviors of a bistable asymmetric carbon fiber-reinforced composite laminated shallow shell experimentally and numerically. The experimental results demonstrate the influence of structural parameters on dynamic snap-through phenomena and nonlinear vibrations. The results of experiment and numerical simulation are consistent and confirm the energy transfer phenomenon.

Snap-through and Eulerian buckling of the bi-stable von Mises truss in nonlinear elasticity: A theoretical, numerical and experimental investigation

Federico Oyedeji Falope et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the equilibrium and stability of a von Mises truss made of rubber material subjected to a vertical load using theoretical, numerical, and experimental methods. The study includes the development of analytical models, finite element simulations, and the identification of constitutive parameters through a genetic algorithm. Experimental observations show good agreement with theoretical and numerical results, revealing insights on snap-through and Eulerian buckling. The accuracy of predicting critical loads is validated through experiments, highlighting the importance of nonlinear formulations for accurate predictions.

Equilibrium and Stability of Anisotropic Hyperelastic Graphene Membranes

Matteo Pelliciari et al.

Summary: The lack of experimental investigations on graphene has led researchers to focus on its mechanical modeling. In this work, an entirely nonlinear approach in finite elasticity is presented for anisotropic hyperelastic graphene membranes, addressing equilibrium problems and stability of configurations under biaxial loads. Unexpectedly, bifurcation and multiple equilibrium solutions are found when graphene is subjected to equibiaxial loads. This work may serve as the basis for accurate investigations of graphene mechanics under large deformations.
