Building on the last new thing: exploring the compatibility of ecological and adaptation silviculture

Anthony W. D'Amato et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the challenge of adapting forest ecosystems to climate change and disturbances, highlighting the compatibility and conflicts between ecological silviculture principles and adaptive frameworks. The conclusion suggests that the four principles of ecological silviculture can still serve as a relevant starting point for implementing adaptation strategies.

Douglas-fir encroachment reduces drought resistance in Oregon white oak of northern California

Jill J. Beckmann et al.

Summary: In a study of an oak woodland in the North Coast of California, Oregon white oak was found to be more resistant to prolonged drought compared to Douglas-fir, with the white oak's drought resistance declining with increasing Douglas-fir competition and increasing with oak competition. The growth of Oregon white oak and Douglas-fir was influenced by different seasonal climate factors, but both species were more limited by Douglas-fir competition than climate.

Modelling the productivity of Siberian larch forests from Landsat NDVI time series in fragmented forest stands of the Mongolian forest-steppe

Stefan Erasmi et al.

Summary: The study utilized Landsat satellite data to analyze vegetation productivity in the Mongolian forest-steppe region, finding that NDVI data can capture the interannual variability of forest productivity, and confirming that this relationship is independent of forest size and forest-grassland ratio. The results suggest that NDVI can be used for retrospective modeling of forest productivity, but the effectiveness of using grassland NDVI as a proxy for forest NDVI in semi-arid areas is limited.

Thinning decreases above-ground biomass increment in central European beech forests but does not change individual tree resistance to climate events

Michal Bosela et al.

Summary: European beech plays a key role in European forests' adaptation and mitigation of climate change, but little is known about its sensitivity to climate variations and drought episodes. A 60-year thinning experiment in Central European beech forests revealed that climate factors in March-July best predict beech growth. Additionally, forest management may increase beech vulnerability to climate change by increasing tree size and reducing drought resistance.
