The relationship between self-care, long-term mortality, and heart failure hospitalization: insights from a real-world cohort study

Esther Calero-Molina et al.

Summary: In patients with chronic heart failure, poor self-care is shown to be an independent predictor of long-term mortality (both all-cause and cardiovascular), heart failure hospitalization, and the combination of these endpoints. Crucial dimensions of self-care such as autonomy-based adherence and consulting behavior also determine the risk of these outcomes over time.

Insomnia and Insomnia Symptoms in Persons With Heart Failure An Integrative Review

Rida Gharzeddine et al.

Summary: Insomnia and insomnia symptoms in persons with heart failure are associated with various sociodemographic, clinical, and cognitive-behavioral factors, and are linked to outcomes such as depression, fatigue, poor physical functioning, and decreased exercise capacity. However, more research, including larger and longitudinal studies, is needed to further understand the complex relationships between insomnia and potential predictors and correlates in heart failure.

Psychological stress in heart failure: a potentially actionable disease modifier

Kristie M. Harris et al.

Summary: Psychological stress is common in patients with heart failure, leading to a more burdensome disease course and decreased quality of life, and is a potentially modifiable factor. Addressing knowledge gaps and advancing the science of stress in heart failure is likely to yield important insights for improving patient quality of life and outcomes.

Adherence to Self-Care Practices and Associated Factors Among Outpatient Adult Heart Failure Patients Attending a Cardiac Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2020

Bethlehem Wube Tegegn et al.

Summary: The study assessed self-care adherence among outpatient adult heart failure patients in 2020 at the cardiac center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Results showed that comorbidity, level of knowledge, and depression were significantly associated with adherence to self-care practice among heart failure patients. Recommendations include nursing intervention programs to improve knowledge on heart failure and targeting self-care strategies towards patients with depression and comorbidity.

Effects of Depression on Heart Failure Self-Care

Kenneth E. Freedland et al.

Summary: Depression, perceived stress, anxiety, and low social support are associated with poor self-care in hospitalized patients with heart failure. Patients with a combination of psychosocial problems, including symptoms of depression, stress, anxiety, and inadequate social support, may have difficulties with self-care that increase their risk for hospitalization. Further research on broad-spectrum psychosocial interventions is needed for heart failure patients with self-care deficits.
