Global issues in setting legal limits on soil metal contamination: A case study of Chile

Jaime Tapia-Gatica et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the risks of arsenic, copper, zinc, and lead contamination in the soil of two important mining areas in Chile and finds that arsenic poses the highest risk. Chile currently lacks specific legislation on legal limits for soil contamination by trace elements, but it is necessary to establish background concentrations and develop national legislation to regulate soil metal contamination.

Application of the ROMUL Mathematical Model for Estimation of CO2 Emission and Dynamics of Organic Matter in the Subantarctic Lithozems

M. A. Nadporozhskaya et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the specific features in the formation of biologically active surface horizons in Subantarctic lithozems using mathematical modeling. The simulation experiments consider the effects of climate, fauna, and vegetation on King George Island in West Antarctica. The results show that the localization of litterfall under green mosses and Antarctic hair grass leads to different organoprofiles in terms of structure and quality. Penguin activity enriches the soil with nitrogen, enhancing litterfall transformation and humification. The study emphasizes the importance of adequately considering litter as an indicator of Antarctic soil response to soil forming factors.

Seasonality of Earthworm Macropores in a Temperate Alpine Area

D. Pezzotti et al.

Summary: This study conducted an intensive experimental field campaign to assess the seasonality of earthworm macropores in a temperate mountain range. Results showed a marked seasonality in earthworm activity, with hibernation in Winter and significant digging activity in other seasons. Additionally, the effectiveness of calcium trioxocarbonate in stimulating earthworm digging activity was confirmed.

Metal Ecotoxicity Studies with Artificially Contaminated versus Anthropogenically Contaminated Soils: Literature Review, Methodological Pitfalls and Research Priorities

Summary: The traditional approach to analyzing metal toxicity in soils using artificially contaminated soils is outdated and cannot provide new insights. Researchers suggest analyzing dose-effect relationships using native field-collected soils to study metal pollution.
