Comparisons of macrofaunal communities occupying shores across the full particle-size spectrum reveals pebble beaches to be a distinct coastal habitat type

Summary: Intertidal research has mainly focused on sandy beaches and rocky shores, with little study on shores with grain sizes of 1-256+ mm. This study investigated the various habitat types and their characteristic biota across this region. Biota from 14 shores within the Western Cape Province were sampled and compared with other published data. Three main groupings were identified: sandy shores, pebble shores, and boulder plus rocky shores. Sandy shores were characterized by burrowing taxa, while boulder and rocky shores were dominated by grazing gastropods. Shores with a particle grain size of 4-<64 mm were colonized by a distinctive macrofaunal community dominated by small, mobile arthropods.
