Predicting male fertility from the sperm methylome: application to 120 bulls with hundreds of artificial insemination records

Valentin Costes et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of sperm DNA methylation in predicting bull fertility and identifies differentially methylated cytosines related to fertility. The results are important for improving fertility prediction models and understanding the interplay between DNA methylation and other molecular features in fertility regulation. The findings may have potential applications in human medicine as well.

Paternal diet induces transgenerational epigenetic inheritance of DNA methylation signatures and phenotypes in sheep model

Camila U. Braz et al.

Summary: This study examined whether diet during the weaning to puberty period could induce changes in sperm DNA methylation and if these changes could be transmitted to subsequent generations. The results showed that over 100 methylated cytosines, altered by the environmental changes in the F0 generation, were inherited by the F1 and F2 generations. Furthermore, the paternal diet was associated with growth and fertility phenotypes in subsequent generations.

Common and Differential Dynamics of the Function of Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells between Holstein and Jersey Cows in Heat-Stress Environment

Eun Tae Kim et al.

Summary: Seasonal changes, particularly transitioning to hot and humid conditions, have a negative impact on dairy cows affecting productivity, reproduction, metabolism, and immunity. This study aimed to investigate the gene expression changes and immune pathways of Holstein and Jersey cows under different environmental conditions. Results showed common and breed-specific immune shifts in response to temperature and humidity variations, enhancing our understanding of how seasonal changes impact dairy cow immunity.

Epigenetic variation in animal populations: Sources, extent, phenotypic implications, and ecological and evolutionary relevance

Guenter Vogt

Summary: The article discusses how animals can produce substantial phenotypic variation from environmental induction and developmental stochasticity, mediated by molecular epigenetic mechanisms. This variation plays a crucial role in adaptation to changing environmental conditions for both asexual and sexually reproducing populations. Experiments show that epigenetic marks can be inherited transgenerationally, with possible implications for accelerated genetic mutations. Sophisticated concepts, animal models, new omics techniques, and data interpretation tools are now available for future research in ecological and evolutionary epigenetics.

Whole Genome DNA Methylation Variations in Mammary Gland Tissues from Holstein Cattle Producing Milk with Various Fat and Protein Contents

Mengqi Wang et al.

Summary: Through whole genome bisulfite sequencing, the study investigated the DNA methylation patterns of mammary gland tissues in Holstein cows, revealing potential regulatory roles of methylation changes in milk fat and protein yields as well as variation in co-located QTLs.

Methylome Patterns of Cattle Adaptation to Heat Stress

Marcello Del Corvo et al.

Summary: This study found that heat stress induces changes in DNA methylation patterns in cattle, with different breeds showing breed-specific responses. Nellore cattle were mainly involved in stress responses and cellular defense genes during stress, while Angus cattle had a less focused response.
