The study found that BDE-209 induces apoptosis, oxidative stress, disturbances in calcium homeostasis and mitochondrial membrane potential, DNA damage, and potentially acts as a liver carcinogen. Interestingly, HepG2 cells attempt to metabolize BDE-209 through the Nrf2-mediated antioxidant pathway.
