Ecological and human health risks of antibiotics in marine species through mass transfer from sea to land in a coastal area: A case study in Qinzhou Bay, the South China sea

Cong Wang et al.

Summary: Antibiotics pollution in aquatic environments is a global issue. This study investigated the presence of antibiotics in marine organisms from Qinzhou Bay in the South China Sea and found that mollusks accumulated the highest levels of antibiotics. The concentrations of antibiotics were positively correlated with pH dependent partition coefficients. Ecological risk assessment indicated that marine species in Qinzhou Bay were threatened by antibiotic contamination.

Assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in seafood collected from coastal aquaculture ponds in Taiwan and human health risk assessment

Yun-Ru Ju et al.

Summary: The levels and distribution of 16 USEPA PAHs in aquaculture farmed fish and shellfish in Taiwan were determined, with results indicating low cancer and non-cancer risks for consumers. Shellfish had higher total PAH concentrations compared to fish, with a predominance of low-molecular-weight PAHs. The seafood studied was deemed safe for consumption, but ongoing monitoring and control of PAH concentrations are needed, particularly for children and seniors.

Prevalence and Characteristics of Streptococcus agalactiae from Freshwater Fish and Pork in Hong Kong Wet Markets

Dulmini Nanayakkara Sapugahawatte et al.

Summary: This study reports on the antimicrobial resistance of fish and pork Group B Streptococcus (GBS) procured from wet markets in Hong Kong. The isolated strains were characterized and tested for antibiotic susceptibility and biofilm formation. The results showed that fish GBS predominantly belonged to serotype Ia, ST7, while pig GBS was serotype III, ST651. Antibiotic susceptibility tests revealed that fish GBS was mostly sensitive to antibiotics, while pig GBS exhibited multidrug resistance. Biofilm formation experiments indicated that a significant proportion of fish GBS and all pig GBS had moderate biofilm formation ability. The findings raise concerns about the zoonotic potential and public health effects of GBS prevalence and multidrug resistance in animals.

A large geographic-scale characterization of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface sediments and multiple aquatic foods of inland freshwater aquaculture ponds in China: Co-occurrence, source and risk assessment

Lu Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in inland freshwater aquaculture ponds (IFAPs) in China. The results showed significant variations in OCP levels in sediments between different regions, with crabs being the most contaminated species. DDTs were found to be the dominant contaminant in both sediments and crabs, with stable degradation products 4,4'-DDE and 4,4'-DDD co-occurring in these compartments. The study also suggested that fresh inputs of DDTs, lindane, and aldrin in multiple regions may be attributed to agricultural soil erosion, surface runoff, and local anthropogenic activities.

Levels, Distribution and Health Risk Assessment of Organochlorine Pesticides in Agricultural Soils from the Pearl River Delta of China

Siyu Yao et al.

Summary: To investigate the pollution status of agricultural soils, a survey of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) was conducted in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) of China. The results showed spatial distribution characteristics of OCP residues within the PRD, with higher concentrations in areas of intensive agriculture and industrial activities. Historical use was identified as the main source of OCPs, and soil pH was found to be negatively correlated with total OCP concentration. Health risk assessment indicated a non-carcinogenic risk for adults. The study highlights the importance of stricter regulation to protect the environment and food safety.

Occurrence and partition of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water, sediment, and organisms from the eastern sea area of Shandong Peninsula, Yellow Sea, China

Huaxin Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the occurrence and partition of organochlorine pesticides, hexachlorocyclohexanes, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes in the eastern sea area of Shandong Peninsula, China, throughout all four seasons in 2016. It identified three hotspots of OCPs in sediment and highlighted the significant accumulation of HCHs and DDTs in organisms via sediment, with a positive linear correlation between HCH levels and trophic level. The study also revealed that the spatio-temporal distribution of OCPs in seawater was mainly governed by the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass.

The Carcinogenic and Non-Carcinogenic Health Risks of Metal(oid)s Bioaccumulation in Leafy Vegetables: A Consumption Advisory

Mohammed Alsafran et al.

Summary: The study in Qatar found high levels of metal(oid)s in leafy vegetables like rocca, coriander, and parsley, exceeding WHO and FAO standards, posing potential health risks to consumers. Consumption of these vegetables grown in certain farms may lead to serious health issues, both carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic, emphasizing the need for increased monitoring and protective measures.

DDT, Chlordane, and Hexachlorobenzene in the Air of the Pearl River Delta Revisited: A Tale of Source, History, and Monsoon

Lele Tian et al.

Summary: Despite being banned for over three decades, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have not significantly decreased in concentration. This study in China's Pearl River Delta found that DDT had higher concentrations in summer than winter, chlordane showed less seasonal variation, and HCB was higher in winter. These findings indicate that geographic and anthropogenic factors, such as source, history, and air circulation pattern, play a significant role in the regional fate of OCP compounds.

Summary: This study measured the concentrations of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine fish from two coastal regions and assessed the human health risk by dietary exposure. The results showed that PAH concentrations in Tanmen fish were at median levels and may pose potential health risks, while the PAH levels in Zhuhai fish were low and negligible in terms of health risks to residents.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in aquatic environments - A critical review

Rui Hou et al.

Summary: Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) are emerging as alternative flame retardants to legacy compounds, with concerns raised over their presence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risks in aquatic environments. NBFRs show source-dependent distribution, high bioaccumulative properties, resistance to degradation processes, and sorption to sludge and sediments in aquatic environments. Ecological risk assessments have suggested potential risks of NBFRs primarily in source areas. Further research is needed to address knowledge gaps in monitoring, toxicokinetics, transformation processes, and ecological risk assessments of NBFRs in aquatic environments.
