Do fish isotopic niches change in an Amazon floodplain lake over the hydrological regime?

Lucas Silva Azevedo et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the trophic niche width and overlap of four fish species in a floodplain lake during flood and dry seasons. Results showed the importance of understanding seasonal variation in fish trophic ecology for sustainable fishery management.

Mercury concentrations and stable isotopes (δ15N and δ 13C) in fish muscle indicate human impacts in tropical coastal lagoons

Yureidy Cabrera Paez et al.

Summary: Coastal lagoons are important nursery habitats for marine fishes, but human activities can impact their water quality and the fish species that reside there. This study investigated the nutrient uptake and mercury levels in three common fish species in two lagoons on the central Mexican coast. The results showed that the lagoon with high wastewater inputs had higher mercury levels in fish, indicating the impact of human activities on these lagoons.

Mercury Concentrations in Four Marine Fishery Resources from Rio de Janeiro Coast, SW Atlantic, and Potential Human Health Risk Via Fish Consumption

Arthur de Barros Bauer et al.

Summary: Mercury contamination in highly consumed marine fish species in Brazil was analyzed in this study, and it was found that the mercury concentrations were generally below the established limits. Human intake of mercury through fish consumption did not exceed the provisional tolerable weekly intake. Estimates for safe fish consumption levels for different age groups were calculated based on the findings.

Methylmercury in Fish from the Amazon Region-a Review Focused on Eating Habits

Thais Casarin Gimenes et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review on MeHg levels in Amazon fishes by their eating habits, finding that carnivore/piscivore fishes had the highest MeHg concentrations, while herbivore fish had the lowest. Women had higher estimated weekly intake (EWI) and provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) indexes. Consuming fish in the region poses a MeHg risk, especially in carnivorous/piscivorous fish, which may lead to serious health issues for the Amazon population.

Summary: This study assessed exposure to total and MeHg in two small riverine communities of the Madeira River in the Amazon Basin, finding that Hg concentrations in women of childbearing age and children were influenced by various factors, with a significant correlation between mother's hair-Hg concentration and their children's Hg concentrations.
