Recycling of tannery fleshing waste by a two step process for preparation of retanning agent

Puhazhendi Puhazhselvan et al.

Summary: The discharge of large quantities of fleshing wastes by leather industries has raised serious environmental concerns. Utilization of fleshings for preparation of value added chemicals provides a practical and economically viable solution. The use of fleshings as resource material for preparation of retanning agent offers a sustainable solution for fleshing waste management and a suitable strategy for circular economy.

Optimization of tomato waste composting with integration of organic feedstock

Ilyass Tabrika et al.

Summary: The study found that adding sheep manure and olive pumice to the mixture resulted in composting temperatures exceeding 55 degrees Celsius for more than 2 weeks, ensuring hygienization. Additionally, phosphorus and potassium significantly increased when sheep manure and chicken manure were added. The addition of olive pumice increased the concentrations of humic acid-like carbon and fulvic acid-like carbon.

Full-scale thermophilic aerobic co-composting of blue-green algae sludge with livestock faeces and straw

Zepeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the full-scale mechanized thermophilic aerobic co-composting of algal sludge and other typical biomass-based wastes. With optimized feedstock material mass ratio, the co-composting process effectively achieved the reduction, harmlessness, and reuse of waste, meeting Chinese agricultural organic fertilizer standard requirements with notable economic benefit. Investigation of associated mechanisms revealed that identified dominant microbial species contributed to high product quality.

Effects of biochar, compost, and biochar-compost on soil total nitrogen and available phosphorus concentrations in a corn field in Papua New Guinea

Godfrey Hannet et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of compost and a mixture of compost with biochar on soil nutrient concentrations in short term. Results showed that applying compost at a higher rate (35 t/ha) significantly increased TN and available P concentrations, while biochar alone significantly increased available P and Ca concentrations. Soil potassium levels remained unchanged across all treatments.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of producing inoculum in composting plants and demonstrated the advantages of its usage through Multivariate Analysis tools. The results showed that the usage of inoculum accelerated the humification process in composting and affected chemical parameters based on dosage and maturation time. The composts obtained were of better quality compared to a commercial substrate, especially with a more significant impact on tomato seedlings.
