A wastewater-based epidemiology tool for COVID-19 surveillance in Portugal

Silvia Monteiro et al.

Summary: This study monitored the trends of SARS-CoV-2 RNA circulation in wastewater in Portugal during different epidemiological phases of the pandemic. The findings highlight the value of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) as a surveillance tool for early warning of COVID-19 outbreaks and its synchrony with actual case trends.

Stability of 28 typical prescription drugs in sewer systems and interaction with the biofilm bacterial community

Anchen Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the hydrolysis, adsorption, and biodegradation of 28 drugs in sewage and sewers at different temperatures, as well as the interaction between drug degradation and biofilm community structure. It was found that some drugs were stable and suitable as biomarkers for wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) back-calculation, while others were unstable and not suitable. In addition, the loss rate of drugs was higher in aerobic sewers compared to anaerobic sewers, and the species abundance and diversity in biofilms showed different trends under different conditions.

An alternative approach for bioanalytical assay optimization for wastewater-based epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2

Tim Boogaerts et al.

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 could be useful in monitoring virus spread and controlling outbreaks. Sensitive sample preparation and detection methods are essential to detect trace levels of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in influent wastewater. Optimization of methods for SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentration and detection in high viral load IWW samples has been conducted, providing important insights for future studies.

Estimating Alcohol Consumption by Wastewater-Based Epidemiology: An Assessment of the Correction Factor for Ethyl Sulfate Using Large-Scale National Monitoring Data

Phong K. Thai et al.

Summary: The researchers proposed a new correction factor (CF) for the alcohol biomarker ethyl sulfate (EtS) based on comparing sales data with wastewater monitoring data, which improves the accuracy of estimating alcohol consumption. Incorporating both excretion rate and sewer degradation, the new CF enhances the estimation accuracy in wastewater-based epidemiology.

Assessing patterns of illicit drug use in a Chinese city by analyzing daily wastewater samples over a one-year period

Qiuda Zheng et al.

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology has been widely used globally to study illicit drug consumption patterns, but in China, most studies have had limited samples, making it challenging to identify temporal trends. This study in a Chinese megacity showed that drug consumption levels were consistent throughout the week, distinguishing it from studies in developed countries. It also revealed a decline in methamphetamine and ketamine consumption, while MDMA and methadone consumption remained stable during the study period.
