Effects of different feedstocks-based biochar on soil remediation: A review

Mengyuan Ji et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the effects of biochar on diverse types of soil pollution, including the influence of feedstocks on biochar properties and its effects on heavy metals, organic pollutants, and greenhouse gas emissions in soil. The study suggests that the selection of appropriate biochar should consider the feedstocks used and their properties. Recommendations for feedstocks selection are provided to maximize the efficiency of biochar in pollution control.

Biochar amendment impacts on microbial community structures and biological and enzyme activities in a weathered tropical sandy loam

Emmanuel Amoakwah et al.

Summary: This study found that biochar application in a tropical ecosystem can significantly increase microbial biomass and activity, as well as enhance soil enzyme activity and related biological properties. The treatment with 30-ton biochar ha(-1) had the most pronounced effects on the composition of microbial communities, with a higher fungal to bacterial ratio and increased carbon sequestration potential.

Biochar accelerates soil organic carbon mineralization via rhizodeposit-activated Actinobacteria

Yingyi Fu et al.

Summary: Biochar altered the composition of rhizosphere bacterial communities, promoting the growth of Actinobacteria and other oligotrophs, leading to increased mineralization of rhizodeposits and SOC, and reduced carbon sequestration by biochar.

An integrated approach to quantify ecological and human health risks of soil heavy metal contamination around coal mining area

Teklit Zerizghi et al.

Summary: Soil heavy metals pose risks to ecological biodiversity and human health. This study quantified the risks of soil heavy metals on ecological communities and human health around Greenside coal mining in South Africa using network environ analysis. The results showed that the assessed heavy metals exceeded local background content and posed risks to vegetation and soil microorganisms. The risks entered the food web and harmed the whole system. Children faced severe non-cancer effects, and some pollution sources exceeded acceptable limits.

Metals in mine wastes: environmental pollution and soil remediation approaches - a review

Taoufik El Rasafi et al.

Summary: Millions of hectares in Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and America are contaminated by mine wastes, posing serious dangers to humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms. Remediation techniques, including biological methods like phytoremediation, are considered as the future solution for cleaning contaminated sites. Metal contamination and its effects on living organisms as well as remediation techniques are discussed in the review.
