Floc formation and growth mechanism during magnesium hydroxide and polyacrylamide coagulation process for reactive orange removal

Jianhai Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the flocculation floc formation and growth processes using magnesium hydroxide and polyacrylamide (PAM) dual-coagulant through controlled experiments. The results showed that the addition of PAM and the generation of magnesium hydroxide affected the formation and growth of flocs, improving the coagulation performance.

In-situ microscopy investigation of floc development during coagulation-flocculation with chemical and natural coagulants

Gustavo Santos Nunes et al.

Summary: This study used in-situ microscopy and image analysis to analyze the floc development during coagulation-flocculation for drinking water treatment. The results provided insights on the coagulation process, showing different surface structures of flocs at different stages of development. The study also found that collision and adhesion between particles influenced the formation rate of flocs. The time of coagulation was inversely correlated with floc size and number.

Understanding and characteristics of coagulation removal of composite pollution of microplastic and norfloxacin during water treatment

Jinsong He et al.

Summary: Water composite pollution, especially microplastics, is a significant challenge in water treatment. This study investigated the removal performance and mechanisms of microplastics and norfloxacin using coagulation. The results demonstrated the enhanced removal efficiency of microplastics in the composite system and provided insights into the mechanisms involved. The study highlights the importance of understanding the characteristics and mechanisms of composite pollutants in order to effectively remove them in water treatment processes.

Coagulation performance and floc properties for synchronous removal of reactive dye and polyethylene terephthalate microplastics

Yingying Duan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the coagulation performance and mechanisms of removing reactive orange and PET microplastics using magnesium hydroxide and polyacrylamide. The results show that the removal efficiencies for reactive orange and PET are 98% and 93% respectively under optimal conditions. The main mechanisms involve electrical neutralization and adsorption for reactive orange by magnesium hydroxide, and PAM bridging for PET.

Coagulation-flocculation performance and floc properties for microplastics removal by magnesium hydroxide and PAM

Bo Li et al.

Summary: Microplastics have become a global concern due to the increasing demand for plastic products and the worsening microplastic pollution. In this study, magnesium hydroxide and anionic polyacrylamide were used as a dual-coagulant to effectively treat water containing polyethylene, improving PE removal efficiency significantly. Various factors such as floc settling rate, type and dosage of PAM were found to significantly influence the removal of MPs, with adsorption bridging and sweeping identified as the main coagulation mechanisms.

Removal of various pollutants from wastewaters using an efficient and degradable hypercrosslinked polymer

Zujin Yang et al.

Summary: 2-hydroxyterephthalic acid (2-HTA) modified hypercrosslinked polymer (2-HTA-HCP) synthesized via Friedel-Crafts reactions serves as an effective adsorbent for removing organic contaminants and heavy metal ions from wastewater. This polymer shows excellent adsorption capacities for amines, phenols, dyes, and metal ions, demonstrating its potential for wastewater treatment. Adsorption mechanism has been investigated and confirmed by FTIR and theoretical calculation results.

Abundance and distribution characteristics of microplastic in plateau cultivated land of Yunnan Province, China

Bin Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution characteristics of microplastics in cultivated soil in Yunnan Province, revealing high levels of microplastic abundance mainly derived from plastic mulch. Various morphologies of microplastics were found in soil, and they exhibited different degrees of aging due to environmental factors. The findings emphasize the importance of paying more attention to microplastic pollution in inland soil.

Removal of polystyrene and polyethylene microplastics using PAC and FeCl3 coagulation: Performance and mechanism

Guanyu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal performance of PS and PE microplastics using PAC and FeCl3 coagulants. Results showed that PAC was more effective than FeCl3, especially in alkaline conditions. Adsorption and complexation were the main removal mechanisms, with the formation of new bonds enhancing the efficiency.

Enhanced removal of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics through polyaluminum chloride coagulation with three typical coagulant aids

Yujian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of anionic polyacrylamide (PAM), sodium alginate (SA), and activated silicic acid (ASA) in enhancing the removal of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics using poly-aluminum chloride (PAC). The results showed that ASA had the highest removal efficiency at conventional dosage, while PAM achieved the best removal effect at high dosage. The mechanism of coagulation was studied, and increasing the dosage of coagulant aids significantly improved the effect of adsorption and sweep flocculation. Additionally, jar tests demonstrated that the current coagulation systems were highly adaptable.

Pollution by anthropogenic microfibers in North-West Mediterranean Sea and efficiency of microfiber removal by a wastewater treatment plant

M. L. Pedrotti et al.

Summary: The release of microfibers is a growing environmental concern due to their potential threat to ecosystems, with a systematic study showing their presence in various environmental compartments and surface waters. Despite efficient removal by wastewater treatment plants, a significant amount of microfibers still enters marine environments daily, emphasizing the need for better pollution control measures. The sources of microfibers in marine environments are diverse, with laundry discharge and atmospheric transport being major pathways.
