Demographic implications of lead poisoning for eagles across North America

Vincent A. Slabe et al.

Summary: Lead poisoning is a significant issue for populations of bald and golden eagles, with unexpectedly high frequencies of chronic and acute poisoning detected. This study finds that lead poisoning suppresses population growth rates for these iconic protected species, highlighting its underappreciated importance.

Summary: This study investigated suspected poisoning cases of white-tailed eagles in Poland and found at least one anticoagulant rodenticide in their liver samples. The extensive use of rodenticides poses a high risk to white-tailed eagles in Poland.

Biomonitoring selenium, mercury, and selenium:mercury molar ratios in selected species in Northeastern US estuaries: risk to biota and humans

Summary: The study revealed variations in mercury and selenium levels, as well as selenium:mercury molar ratios, within and between species in New Jersey. While selenium can help mitigate mercury toxicity, the effectiveness declines as fish size increases, leading to lower selenium:mercury molar ratios.

Integrating active and passive monitoring to assess sublethal effects and mortality from lead poisoning in birds of prey

Esther Descalzo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that lead poisoning is a significant cause of death and sublethal effects on haem biosynthesis, P metabolism, and oxidative stress in birds of prey in Spain, with abnormal levels of lead found in blood and liver, along with negative impacts on biological metabolism, oxidative stress, and immune function.

Summary: A study found high levels of zinc, cadmium, and lead in Atlantic puffins off the coast of Galicia, with zinc being the most abundant. Adults had higher metal concentrations than young animals, and females showed higher levels than males.

USING REGURGITATED PELLETS FROM WHITE-TAILED SEA-EAGLES AS NONINVASIVE SAMPLES TO ASSESS LEAD EXPOSURE CAUSED BY HUNTING IN GERMANY

Andrea-Carolin Menzel et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic lead intoxication is the main cause of death of White-tailed Sea-Eagles in Germany, largely due to ingestion of lead fragments from hunted game animals. Research findings suggest a higher presence of metal contamination in regurgitated pellets during the hunting season and in pellets containing mammalian remains.

Concentration of Trace Elements in Raptors from Three Regions of Slovakia, Central Europe

Zuzana Hurnikova et al.

Summary: The study in Slovakia focused on the contamination status of raptor species with selected trace elements, revealing high concentrations of copper and lead in some individuals, and significantly higher levels of mercury in certain regions. The Spis and Tatry region showed the highest concentrations of cadmium, manganese, and chromium, suggesting the need for continued toxic elements biomonitoring in this area. Overall, while most monitored metals in the liver and muscles of birds of prey did not exceed established tolerable levels, cases of intoxication with copper, cadmium, and lead were occasionally reported.

Summary: The study found that lead exposure in golden eagles and white-tailed sea eagles in Sweden shows seasonal patterns, with significantly elevated levels after the start of hunting seasons. It is recommended to shift to lead-free ammunition to protect wildlife from unnecessary harm.

Essential differences in the mineral status of free-ranging European bison Bison bonasus populations in Poland: The effect of the anthroposphere and lithosphere

Daniel Klich et al.

Summary: The study of hepatic concentrations of 27 elements in free-ranging European bison populations revealed differences in element concentrations between populations living in different locations, with the mountain population in Bieszczady being the most distinctive. Even geographically close lowland populations sometimes have different hepatic concentrations of particular elements. Individual sex and age have a weak effect on mineral status.

Chromium contamination and effect on environmental health and its remediation: A sustainable approaches

Shiv Prasad et al.

Summary: Chromium is a critical trace element for human health, but contamination, particularly in the form of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], has increased in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems due to anthropogenic activities. Excessive exposure to chromium can lead to toxic health effects in humans and animals, while pollution negatively affects plant metabolic activities, reducing crop quality. Monitoring and implementing remediation technologies is essential to balance the environment and nature.

Lead Exposure is Unrelated to Wind Turbine Mortality in Golden Eagles

Tabitha C. Viner et al.

Summary: Lead toxicosis poses a threat to bald eagles, golden eagles, California condors, and various waterfowl, potentially leading to their deaths. Perspectives from natural resource professionals: Attitudes on lead ammunition risks and use of nonlead ammunition

John H. Schulz et al.

Summary: The survey results show that hunters are generally positive towards using nonlead ammunition, with a substantial proportion indicating they will continue or switch to nonlead. There is some overlap between hunters and nonhunters in attitudes towards lead contamination and nonlead ammunition, suggesting both groups are important target audiences for education and outreach programs.
