Characteristics and transformation pathways of venlafaxine degradation during disinfection processes using free chlorine and chlorine dioxide

Juan Lv et al.

Summary: The study found that venlafaxine can be efficiently removed during disinfection processes, especially when reacted with ClO2. Higher dosage of disinfectant and mildly alkaline conditions enhance degradation of venlafaxine. However, the reactions are impacted by real water matrices, with the presence of chloride and low concentrations of fulvic acid promoting the decomposition process.

Environmental risk assessments of multiclass pharmaceutical active compounds: selection of high priority concern pharmaceuticals using entropy-utility functions

Somayeh Golbaz et al.

Summary: This research aimed to identify high-risk pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) by analyzing the occurrence, persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of 62 drugs widely used in Iran. The study utilized multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) for risk assessment and prioritization of PhACs, showing that using unequal weights in the utility function is a more conservative and effective approach for prioritization.

Sample preparation optimization by central composite design for multi class determination of 172 emerging contaminants in wastewaters and tap water using liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry

Anna Ofrydopoulou et al.

Summary: A comprehensive workflow for the quantitative analysis of 172 anthropogenic organic compounds belonging to emerging contaminants has been developed for application to wastewater and tap water, based on solid phase extraction and high resolution mass spectrometry. The optimized sample preparation process achieved good sensitivity and robustness, with recoveries over 70% and method quantification limits < 1 ng/L. The method applicability was tested over wastewater collected from a municipal wastewater treatment plant, revealing the presence of compounds in influents and effluents at varying concentrations.
