Employing convex shape absorber for enhancing the performance of solar still desalination system

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on a new solar still called convex SS. The results showed that the convex SS had higher productivity compared to the conventional SS, especially at 15 cm convex height and with jute wick. Increasing the convex height increased the daily productivity until a peak was reached at 15 cm. Adding Ag nanoparticles to the black paint used on the convex surface and using thermal energy storage material (paraffin wax) mixed with Ag nanoparticles and Nano black paint further enhanced the daily productivity of the convex SS.

A comparative study of various fatty acids as phase change material to enhance the freshwater productivity of solar still

Summary: The scarcity of potable water has become an impending crisis due to population growth, industrialization, and continuous groundwater extraction. Solar desalination using a solar still with phase change material (PCM) storage is a low-cost method to generate freshwater. This study conducted experimental, energy, exergy, and economic analysis on a conventional solar still and solar stills using different types of fatty acids as PCM storage with pin fins for enhanced heat transfer. The results showed that the solar still with stearic acid and pin fins had the highest economic efficiency among all cases.

Development of a frugal solar still using phase change material and nanoparticles integrated with commercialization through a novel economic model

Summary: By using paraffin wax and nanoparticles in a frugal solar still, a significant increase in distillation output has been observed. The use of phase change material (PCM) increased the yield, and the addition of nanoparticles further improved the yield. In addition, the use of non-phase change material (NPCM) also increased the evaporative heat transfer coefficient. Experimental results showed that the cost of distilled water was reduced by 40% and the payback period was 4.3 years for this energy-efficient solar still.

Performance study on solar still using nano disbanded phase change material (NDPCM)

Performance evaluation of PCM based solar concentrator type desalination device

Summary: In the water-stressed Thar desert of Rajasthan, a concentrating solar thermal desalination device was developed to address the limited surface water resources and brackish groundwater. Performance improvements of single slope solar still using graphite plate fins and magnets

Summary: In this study, the performance of a single slope solar still was improved by utilizing graphite plate fins and magnets, which resulted in increased productivity, energy, and exergy efficiency compared to conventional solar stills under the same climate conditions. The economic and environmental benefits were evaluated over a 10-year period, showing reduced CO2 emissions and carbon credits earned with the improved solar still design. Distillate quality from both systems met the standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

Experimental investigation of single-basin solar still using solid staggered fins inserted in paraffin wax PCM bed for enhancing productivity

Enhancing tubular solar still performance using novel PCM-tubes

Further research is needed to continue improving the tubular solar still.
