Inhibition of Hexavalent Chromium Release from Drinking Water Distribution Systems: Effects of Water Chemistry-Based Corrosion Control Strategies

Cheng Tan et al.

Summary: In this study, inhibitive corrosion control strategies for Cr(VI) formation through the oxidation of Cr(0) by chlorine were investigated by adjusting chemical water parameters. The results revealed that increasing pH, silicate, alkalinity, and calcium suppressed Cr(VI) formation due to the precipitation of Cr(III) solids on the surface of Cr(0). These Cr(III) precipitates were less reactive with chlorine and inhibited Cr redox reactivity. The concentration of surface Cr(III) solids was inversely correlated with the rate constant of Cr(VI) formation, and the addition of phosphate showed varying effects on Cr(VI) formation depending on its concentration.

Understanding Competitive Phosphate and Silicate Adsorption on Goethite by Connecting Batch Experiments with Density Functional Theory Calculations

Ping Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the competitive adsorption of phosphate and silicate on goethite and reveals the pH-dependent competition between these two species. The results demonstrate selective adsorption of phosphate at low pH and silicate at high pH, with significant competition observed at intermediate pH. The findings suggest that goethite surface chemistry plays a crucial role in controlling the retention of these oxyanions.

Study on adsorption of phosphate from aqueous solution by zirconium modified coal gasification coarse slag

Baoguo Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dephosphorization performance of Zr-modified coal gasification coarse slag (CGCS) as a carrier material. The results show that CGCS-Zr4 has a large specific surface area, good adsorption selectivity for phosphate ions, and excellent reusability. It is also suitable for the continuous treatment of large bed volumes of synthetic and actual wastewater.

Impact of sodium silicate on lead release and colloid size distributions in drinking water

Bofu Li et al.

Summary: Sodium silicate has been used as a corrosion control treatment for lead in drinking water, but it is found to be inferior to orthophosphate in circumneutral pH water with low alkalinity. Excess silicate can also be highly detrimental to controlling lead release.

Effects of pH and Dissolved Silicate on Phosphate Mineral-Water Partitioning with Goethite

Md Abdus Sabur et al.

Summary: Adsorption experiments with goethite showed that maximum silicate adsorption occurred under alkaline conditions while the competitive effect of silicate on phosphate adsorption was more pronounced under alkaline conditions and elevated molar Si:P ratios (>4). Dissolved silicate did not affect phosphate desorption, even at high Si:P ratios and alkaline pH, indicating kinetic factors prevented silicate from displacing phosphate from goethite binding sites.

Applications of hydrogen as a collision and reaction cell gas for enhanced measurement capability applied to low level stable and radioactive isotope detection using ICP-MS/MS

B. Russell et al.

Summary: Tandem ICP-MS/MS technology with collision/reaction cell capability can effectively separate spectral interferences, improving measurement confidence and expanding the range of isotopes measurable. The use of hydrogen gas in conjunction with ICP-MS/MS can enhance the detection of stable and radioactive pollutants.
