The photodegradation processes and mechanisms of polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene terephthalate microplastic in aquatic environments: Important role of clay minerals

Ling Ding et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the photodegradation behaviors of PVC and PET in the presence of clay minerals. The results demonstrated that clay minerals, particularly kaolinite, significantly promoted the photodegradation of MPs, with a more pronounced effect on PET aging. Additionally, the study revealed that UV irradiation facilitated the photo-ionization reactions, leading to the generation of key reactive oxygen species contributing to the degradation of MPs.

Dissolved Organic Matter Promotes the Aging Process of Polystyrene Microplastics under Dark and Ultraviolet Light Conditions: The Crucial Role of Reactive Oxygen Species

Xinran Qiu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the influence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the aging process of microplastics (MPs). The results show that DOM accelerates the aging of MPs under both dark and ultraviolet light conditions, with fulvic acid having a more significant effect. This research provides important insights into the migration of MPs in groundwater and deep surface water.

Hydroxyl radical formation during oxygen-mediated oxidation of ferrous iron on mineral surface: Dependence on mineral identity

Ning Chen et al.

Summary: Many studies have examined the redox behavior of sorbed ferrous ions on mineral surfaces, but few have investigated the formation of hydroxyl radicals during Fe(II) oxidation at circumneutral pH. This study found that the production of hydroxyl radicals was significantly higher in Fe(II)/α/γ-Al2O3 systems compared to dissolved Fe(II) alone. However, the production of hydroxyl radicals slightly decreased in Fe(II)/α-FeOOH/α-Fe2O3 systems. Mineral types and solution pH strongly influenced Fe(II) oxidation and hydroxyl radical production, which in turn impacted phenol degradation.

Efficient persulfate activation by hematite nanocrystals for degradation of organic pollutants under visible light irradiation: Facet-dependent catalytic performance and degradation mechanism

Ting Guo et al.

Summary: The study reveals the facet-dependent persulfate activation by hematite crystals under visible light irradiation, with hematite nanoplates (NPs) showing superior performance in adsorption and generation of active species compared to nanocubes (NCs) and nanorods (NRs). The density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirms the higher adsorption capacity of NPs for persulfate, leading to more PS-Fe(III) complexes on the surface and production of radicals for pollutants oxidation.

Active Iron Phases Regulate the Abiotic Transformation of Organic Carbon during Redox Fluctuation Cycles of Paddy Soil

Ning Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that active Fe species play a crucial role in driving hydroxyl radical formation and organic carbon transformation during redox cycles in paddy soils. The oxidative reactions induced by hydroxyl radicals led to the transformation of organic carbon, accounting for a significant portion of CO2 production during oxygenation. After redox cycles, a higher percentage of organic carbon associated with active Fe species was released, suggesting that active Fe phases may contribute more to the loss of organic carbon compared to high-crystalline Fe phases.

Molybdenum Bioavailability and Asymbiotic Nitrogen Fixation in Soils are Raised by Iron (Oxyhydr)oxide-Mediated Free Radical Production

Guang-Hui Yu et al.

Summary: Long-term manure fertilization increases microbial diversity and content of iron (oxyhydr)oxides in soils, leading to higher Mo bioavailability and storage, as well as increased abundance of nifH genes and nitrogenase activity. This intensifies asymbiotic N fixation and provides a strategy for enhancing biological N fixation in agricultural ecosystems.
