Design and evaluation of short-term monitoring campaigns for long-term air pollution exposure assessment

Magali N. Blanco et al.

Summary: In this study, different short-term monitoring designs were compared to understand their impact on exposure surfaces. It was found that a temporally-balanced sampling design is crucial for assessing long-term exposure.

Publicly available low-cost sensor measurements for PM2.5 exposure modeling: Guidance for monitor deployment and data selection

Jianzhao Bi et al.

Summary: High-quality exposure modeling is crucial for assessing the health effects of PM2.5 in epidemiological studies. In this study, commercial low-cost PM2.5 network PurpleAir data was used to improve exposure prediction accuracy, with the introduction of a PCA distance metric guiding monitor deployment. Shorter PCA distances from PurpleAir monitors significantly enhanced model prediction accuracy.

Characterization of Annual Average Traffic-Related Air Pollution Concentrations in the Greater Seattle Area from a Year-Long Mobile Monitoring Campaign

Magali N. Blanco et al.

Summary: Growing evidence suggests that traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) has adverse health effects. This study designed an innovative and extensive mobile monitoring campaign to characterize TRAP exposure levels for the Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) study in Seattle. The results showed that the campaign effectively captured the spatial variations of air pollutants, which were explained by land use features related to traffic.

Modelling nationwide spatial variation of ultrafine particles based on mobile monitoring

Jules Kerckhoffs et al.

Summary: This study developed robust nation-wide models for long-term UFP exposure through combining mobile monitoring with long-term regional background monitoring. Minor differences in predictive performance between different algorithms were found, but the deconvolution approach is considered more physically realistic. The models will be applied in Dutch nation-wide health studies.

High-Spatial-Resolution Estimates of Ultrafine Particle Concentrations across the Continental United States

Provat K. Saha et al.

Summary: There is evidence showing the potential toxicity of ultrafine particles compared to larger particles, with a national-scale model developed to predict particle number concentration (PNC) across the United States. Factors such as traffic, commercial land use, and urbanization explain much of the spatial variability of PNC. The model's high-spatial-resolution estimates are useful for analyzing population exposure, socioeconomic disparities, health impacts, and environmental policies.

Exposure to Air Pollution in Relation to Risk of Dementia and Related Outcomes: An Updated Systematic Review of the Epidemiological Literature

Jennifer Weave et al.

Summary: This study updated the literature review on the association between air pollution and cognitive health, finding that high-quality studies generally supported a negative association between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and cognitive decline, while findings related to other pollutants were inconclusive. Methodological challenges continue to be a common issue in this line of research.
