Simultaneous Phenol Removal and Resource Recovery from Phenolic Wastewater by Electrocatalytic Hydrogenation

Zhenao Gu et al.

Summary: An electrocatalytic hydrogenation method was developed to efficiently and selectively transform phenol to cyclohexanol. The technique exhibited excellent performance under different pH values and high phenol concentrations, with little influence from functional groups on phenol. This study provides a novel solution for the remediation of phenol wastewater and the recovery of organic compounds.

Influence of salinity on the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process: Implications to treatment of high salinity wastewater

Yuting Yuan et al.

Summary: The presence of salts, particularly chloride ions, significantly influences the performance of both conventional and catalytic ozonation processes by affecting the rate and extent of organic compound degradation. This influence is due to scavenging of O-3, transformation of organics to more hydrophobic forms, and inhibition of hydroxyl radicals. Through appropriate choice of catalyst, this effect can be mitigated to some extent.

Coal chemical industry membrane concentrates: characterisation and treatment by ozonation and catalytic ozonation processes

Xiangtong Kong et al.

Summary: This study characterized the organic composition of RO concentrates from the coal chemical industry and investigated their degradability using ozonation and catalytic ozonation processes. Humic-like substances and low molecular weight neutral compounds were found to be the dominant constituents. The pure ozonation process showed low treatment efficiency due to the refractory nature of the organic compounds present, while the catalytic ozonation process using a Fe-oxide catalyst resulted in higher degradation rates. Techno-economic analysis indicated that the cost of implementing ozonation processes for CCI concentrate treatment is negligible compared to the overall cost of the complete ZLD process.

Caveats in the Use of Tertiary Butyl Alcohol as a Probe for Hydroxyl Radical Involvement in Conventional Ozonation and Catalytic Ozonation Processes

Shikha Garg et al.

Summary: This study highlights the limitations of using tert-butanol (TBA) to determine the contribution of hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) in organic oxidation processes. The findings suggest that TBA cannot access surface-located (OH)-O-center dot formed during certain oxidation processes, and it can interfere with the adsorption and removal of organics on the catalyst surface. The presence of TBA may also affect the stability of ozone and promote direct oxidation of ozone-reactive organics or surface-mediated oxidation. Caution should be exercised when interpreting observations in the presence of TBA, and further experimentation is needed to confirm/reject the role of (OH)-O-center dot in organic oxidation.

Enhanced Catalytic Ozonation for Eliminating CH3SH via Graphene-Supported Positively Charged Atomic Pt Undergoing Pt2+/Pt4+ Redox Cycle

Yajing Huang et al.

Summary: The study successfully constructed atomically dispersed Pt catalysts with electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI), achieving efficient catalytic ozonation for CH3SH degradation by supporting positively charged Pt atoms on graphene. The circulation between Pt2+ and Pt4+ is essential for maintaining stable catalytic activity over 12 hours.

Study of adhesion properties and mechanism of sodium silicate binder reinforced with silicate fume

Lai Song et al.

Summary: The study shows that silica fume can enhance the bonding strength and humidity resistance of sodium silicate bonded sand. The hydration reaction of the hardened binder is a spontaneous process, where water molecules destroy the -Si-O-Si bonds to depolymerize the sodium silicate bonded network.

Summary: The study successfully demonstrated the generation of high steady state hydroxyl radical oxidant at low cost under low potential using Magneli phase titanium suboxide particles as the anode material. The flow anode system developed in this study showed high efficiency and low cost for water treatment, enabling degradation of organic contaminants.

Kinetic Modeling-Assisted Mechanistic Understanding of the Catalytic Ozonation Process Using Cu-Al Layered Double Hydroxides and Copper Oxide Catalysts

Yuting Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, copper aluminum layered hydroxides and copper oxide were used as catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation, targeting the removal of oxalate and formate contaminants. The role of the catalyst in contaminant removal was elucidated, with Cu-Al LDHs facilitating slow decay of O-3 to form surface hydroxyl radicals, while CuO rapidly transforms O-3 into surface-located hydroxyl radicals and/or other oxidants. Futile consumption of surface-located oxidants via interaction with the catalyst surface was minimal for Cu-Al LDHs, but becomes significant with higher CuO dosages.
