Long-range spatial variability in sediment associations and solid-phase speciation of antimony and arsenic in a mining-impacted river system

Steven Doherty et al.

Summary: In this study, the solid-phase associations and speciation of antimony and arsenic in sediments of the Macleay River in Australia were quantified using sequential extractions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The results showed distinct patterns of association for antimony and arsenic, with arsenic predominantly in residual phases and antimony mainly in amorphous associations. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the geochemical influences and fluvial processes on metalloid availability and distribution in contaminated river environments.

Schwertmannite: A review of its occurrence, formation, structure, stability and interactions with oxyanions

Valerie A. Schoepfer et al.

Summary: Schwertmannite is a widely studied Fe(III) oxyhydroxy-sulfate mineral, formed via direct precipitation of iron in acid sulfate waters. Despite its recognition as a new mineral almost 30 years ago, its poor crystallinity, fine particle size, variable composition and metastability have limited our ability to conclusively resolve its crystal structure and stability. Studies have shown that schwertmannite strongly impacts iron and sulfur cycling, acidity dynamics, and interactions with co-associated oxyanionic species, highlighting its importance in environmental geochemistry and wastewater treatment.

Summary: Granulated schwertmannite shows promising adsorption capacity and significant removal of oxyanions, especially under acidic conditions. The study demonstrates the importance of considering the trade-off between residence time and sorption kinetics when selecting filter bed materials.

Impact of Antimony(V) on Iron(II)-Catalyzed Ferrihydrite Transformation Pathways: A Novel Mineral Switch for Feroxyhyte Formation

Kerstin Hockmann et al.

Summary: The study found that at low and medium Sb loadings, Fe(II) induced rapid transformation of ferrihydrite to goethite, with some lepidocrocite forming as an intermediate phase. In contrast, the highest Sb:Fe(III) ratio inhibited lepidocrocite formation, decreased the extent of goethite formation, and instead resulted in substantial formation of feroxyhyte, a rarely reported FeOOH polymorph.

Arsenic-Imposed Effects on Schwertmannite and Jarosite Formation in Acid Mine Drainage and Coupled Impacts on Arsenic Mobility

Edward D. Burton et al.

Summary: This study explores the interactions between As and Fe(III) minerals in acid mine drainage, revealing that arsenic significantly influences the formation and evolution of Fe(III) minerals. Arsenic has a significant impact on the stability and enrichment of Fe(III) minerals, triggering new mineral formation reactions.
