Plants are a natural source of nitrous oxide even in field conditions as explained by 15N site preference

Arbindra Timilsina et al.

Summary: Plants may act as a natural source of N2O in field conditions, challenging the view that they are a medium to transport soil-produced N2O into the atmosphere.

High N2O reduction potential by denitrification in the nearshore site of a riparian zone

Siyan Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that N2O emission was lower in nearshore sites compared to offshore sites in riparian zones, with denitrification dominating nearshore emissions; N2O emission was influenced by NH4+-N content and denitrifier communities; N2O-producing community was dominated by nirS-harbouring bacteria, while N2O-reducing community was dominated by nosZ I-harbouring bacteria.

Structure and function of the soil microbiome underlying N2O emissions from global wetlands

Mohammad Bahram et al.

Summary: Wetland soils are the dominant source of N2O emissions, but the microbial players and processes involved are not well understood. This study found that the abundance of nitrifying archaea is a key factor explaining N2O emissions from wetland soils globally. Climate change and environmental changes may enhance the presence of these archaea and transform wetland soils into an even greater source of N2O.

Responses of N2O Production and Abundances of Associated Microorganisms to Soil Profiles and Water Regime in Two Paddy Soils

Jichao Zuo et al.

Summary: Soil moisture and soil layers have significant impacts on N2O emissions and the abundance of associated microbes. Soil depth and water content significantly affect N2O emissions. N2O emissions in hydromorphic paddy soils are significantly higher than in gleyed paddy soils.

How does deep-band fertilizer placement reduce N2O emissions and increase maize yields?

Peng Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that NO3--N availability in the soil was the main factor influencing N2O production and emissions, with N2O emissions strongly correlated to production and diffusion in the 0-20 cm soil layer. Deep-band fertilizer placement significantly decreased surface N2O emissions and production and diffusion rates in the 0-20 cm soil profile, with a recommended fertilization depth of 25 cm showing reductions in N2O emissions and improvements in maize yield, N uptake, biomass, and NUE.

A few key nirK- and nosZ-denitrifier taxa play a dominant role in moisture-enhanced N2O emissions in acidic paddy soil

Hongling Qin et al.

Summary: This study showed that denitrification may play a more dominant role in N2O emissions than nitrification in acidic paddy soil under sufficient NH4NO3 inputs. The effects of soil moisture on N2O emissions could be attributed to a few key nirK- and nosZ-denitrifier taxa, through shifts in community composition and synergistic interactions of network structures between them.
