Emerging and legacy flame retardants in indoor air and dust samples of Tarragona Province (Catalonia, Spain)

Roser Esplugas et al.

Summary: The study found the presence of both legacy and novel flame retardants in indoor environments in Tarragona Province, Spain, with some OPFRs showing high levels. Schools had lower levels of novel FRs, while air concentrations of HFRs were significantly higher in home samples, and dust levels of HFRs were significantly lower in office samples.

Flame retardants and their associations with thyroid hormone-related variables in northern fulmars from the Faroe Islands

Ase-Karen Mortensen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the associations between flame retardants (FRs) concentrations and changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis in northern fulmars, finding that PBDEs and other FRs were linked to alterations in thyroid status, affecting thyroid hormone levels and gene expression. The results suggested that exposure to moderate levels of FRs could lead to thyroid axis perturbation at the molecular/biochemical levels in seabird species in the North Atlantic.

Organophosphate esters in agro-foods: Occurrence, sources and emerging challenges

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: Safety and sustainable agro-food production is crucial for food and nutrition security. Organic phosphate esters (OPEs) have been found in agro-foods worldwide, raising concerns about their impact on human and wildlife health. However, there is limited information about the presence, sources, and transmission routes of OPEs in agro-foods. Thus, there is a need for systematic monitoring of OPE concentrations in different categories of agro-foods, as well as research on the behavior and health risks of OPEs in the agro-food chain.

Gender and Age-Specific Differences in the Association of Thyroid Function and Hyperuricemia in Chinese: A Cross-Sectional Study

Ming Yang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between thyroid function and hyperuricemia in a large Chinese population, with a focus on the influences of gender and age. The results showed that the risk of hyperuricemia was positively associated with higher TSH levels in both males and females, regardless of age. Older females showed a higher risk of hyperuricemia compared to younger females. Additionally, males with higher TSH levels were more vulnerable to hyperuricemia risk.

Prenatal exposure to organophosphate esters and neonatal thyroid-stimulating hormone levels: A birth cohort study in Wuhan, China

Yun Tao et al.

Summary: This study found that prenatal exposure to organophosphate esters (OPEs) may lead to sex-dependent changes in neonatal TSH levels. Despite differences in sex-selective effects among different OPE metabolites, more evidence supported the association between OPE exposure and increased TSH levels in both males and females.

Christopher Goodchild et al.

Summary: Exposure to brominated flame retardant chemicals EHTBB and TBPH in American kestrels' embryos may cause thyroid dysfunction and oxidative stress, affecting hatching success. The exposed hatchlings showed various physiological effects, with exposure to 50 ng g(-1) EHTBB appearing to decrease hatching success.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Maternal Urinary Organophosphate Esters and Alterations in Maternal and Neonatal Thyroid Hormones

Zana Percy et al.

Summary: The study found that gestational exposure to certain OPEs may influence maternal and neonatal thyroid function, with bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl)-phosphate being strongly associated with alterations in thyroid hormone levels. Other OPEs showed weaker evidence of association with thyroid hormone alterations. Replication in other cohorts is needed to confirm these findings.
