Kinetics of oligomer-forming reactions involving the major functional groups present in atmospheric secondary organic aerosol particles

Hannah K. Maben et al.

Summary: Atmospheric organic aerosol particles have significant impacts on climate, human health, and environmental health. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA), formed by the gas-to-particle partitioning of oxidized volatile organic compounds (VOCs), contributes a large fraction of the organic material in aerosols. This study investigated the accretion reactions of compounds containing reactive hydroperoxide, hydroxyl, carboxyl, aldehyde, and ketone groups in organic/aqueous mixtures. The reactions and products were characterized, and the rate and equilibrium constants were determined. These findings provide valuable insights into the formation of atmospheric aerosols and can improve the modeling of SOA chemistry.

Process-Level Modeling Can Simultaneously Explain Secondary Organic Aerosol Evolution in Chambers and Flow Reactors

Yicong He et al.

Summary: In this study, a kinetic model for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) was developed and used to explain the evolution of SOA in both environmental chambers (ECs) and oxidation flow reactors (OFRs). The results show that by considering various processes, the model is able to explain the observed changes in SOA mass, composition, and size distribution.

Summary: Advancements in understanding the fundamental chemical and physical processes of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation have been made through laboratory studies. While some parameters show good representation of atmospherically relevant ranges, significant gaps exist for others, requiring further research to bridge these differences.

Summary: This study developed a simpleSOM model to simulate the formation of secondary organic aerosols, demonstrating its ability to reproduce environmental chamber data, highlight chemical and microphysical processes, and discuss implications for SOA formation. The results showed that simpleSOM provides a comprehensive framework for consistently modeling SOA formation and evolution in box and 3D models.

The Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model versions 5.3 and 5.3.1: system updates and evaluation

K. Wyat Appel et al.

Summary: The CMAQ model version 5.3, released in August 2019, features significant updates in science, functionality, and computation efficiency compared to version 5.2.1. Major advances in the new model include enhanced aerosol, chlorine, bromine, and iodine chemistry, as well as updated deposition models. In addition, support for the WRF model's hybrid vertical coordinate was added. Evaluations of CMAQ531 show differences in O-3 and PM2:5 values compared to CMAQ521.
