Future material requirements for global sustainable offshore wind energy development

Chen Li et al.

Summary: This study assesses the material demand and supply of offshore wind energy (OWE) worldwide, revealing that OWE development will require substantial amounts of steel, concrete, copper, and aluminum, as well as a significant increase in rare earth elements. Closed-loop recycling of end-of-life wind turbines could partially meet the material demand, and extending the lifetime of wind turbines could reduce material requirements.

Assessing wind energy development in Uganda: Opportunities and challenges

Benard M. Wabukala et al.

Summary: The opportunities for wind energy development in Uganda lie in the increasing energy demand, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the goal of expanding electricity access to rural areas. However, challenges such as insufficient wind resource data, high initial investment costs, weak infrastructure, and lack of supportive policies hinder the progress in this sector. To accelerate wind energy development, comprehensive wind resource assessment, infrastructure investment, financial de-risking, capacity building, and policy incentives are essential.
