Summary: Nitrous acid, HONO, is a crucial precursor to OH radicals in the atmospheric boundary layer, with the conversion of NO2 to HONO at the ocean surface being identified as an important mechanism. Results show significant geographical variation in the predominant HONO formation mechanisms in marine environments.

Development of a laser-photofragmentation laser-induced fluorescence instrument for the detection of nitrous acid and hydroxyl radicals in the atmosphere

Summary: A new instrument using laser photofragmentation and resonant laser-induced fluorescence has been developed to measure atmospheric HONO and OH concentrations. The instrument is calibrated for accuracy by determining photofragmentation efficiency and sensitivity for detecting OH fragments. With a detection limit of 9 ppt, the instrument has been successfully used for ambient measurements in both outdoor and indoor environments.
