Summary: Low-carbon hydrogen can mitigate emissions in hard-to-abate sectors and the US has introduced a production tax credit to incentivize its production. Hydrogen produced via electrolysis can qualify for the subsidy if generated from carbon-free resources, but in the presence of emitting resources, it may fail to do so. The study finds that subsidized grid-connected hydrogen production could induce additional emissions unless strict clean energy procurement requirements are enforced.

Summary: Interest in blue hydrogen production technologies is increasing, but a comprehensive assessment is still needed. This study compares the cost and greenhouse gas emissions of three natural gas-based blue hydrogen production technologies and finds that steam methane reforming and autothermal reforming are economically preferable. The study also highlights the importance of plant size and carbon capture rate in determining the cost and emissions of blue hydrogen production.

Summary: E-fuels have the potential to replace fossil fuels, but there are risks and challenges involved. While large-scale deployment may reduce costs, the sustainability and availability of E-fuels remain uncertain. Therefore, policies should cautiously support the development of E-fuels while also considering their risks.

Summary: Wind and solar energy need to be supplemented by energy storage and firm generating capacity. Long-duration energy storage is seen as a potential solution to intermittency in renewable energy generation. The key parameters for the performance of energy storage are energy capacity cost and discharge efficiency. Storage systems with durations exceeding 100 hours have the greatest impact on electricity cost and firm generation.

Summary: Water electrolysis powered by solar photovoltaics is considered a promising green technology for producing hydrogen. In order to ensure its contribution to global energy decarbonisation, life cycle assessment and net energy analysis are important tools to evaluate its environmental impacts and energy balance. Despite initial findings of lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional steam methane reforming, sensitivity analysis reveals that solar-electrolysis may have comparable emissions under certain conditions. Further research and integration of LCA and NEA into project planning is recommended to promote green hydrogen production goals.
